For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all gods. For the Lord will not drive away his people. For in his hand are all the limits of the earth, and he beholds the heights of the mountains.

Book 1 on Luke

Holy Scripture teaches us that, in those who are praiseworthy, not only their character but also their parents ought to be praised; so that, as it were, an inheritance of unsullied purity may be preeminent in those whom we wish to commend. For what other intention does the holy Evangelist have in this passage, if not to ennoble Saint John the Baptist by his parents, his miracles, his character, his office, and his Passion? Thus also the mother of holy Samuel, Hannah, is praised; thus Isaac received from his parents a nobility of piety which he bequeathed to his posterity. Therefore Zechariah is a priest, and not merely a priest, but also of the section of Abijah — that is, of noble rank among the higher priestly families.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ I have sinned beyond the number of the sands of the sea, and my sins have been multiplied; and I am not worthy to look up to the height of heaven because of the multitude of my iniquity, for I have provoked your anger,

* And have done evil before you.

℣ For I acknowledge my iniquity, and my transgression is ever before me; because against you only have I sinned.

℟ And have done evil before you.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Lesson 2

And his wife, he says, was of the daughters of Aaron. Therefore the noble birth of Saint John extends not only from his parents but also from his ancestors — illustrious not by secular power but venerable by succession in religion. For such ancestors ought the forerunner of Christ to have had; so that he might seem to preach the faith of the Lord's coming not as something suddenly conceived, but received from ancestors and instilled by the very law of nature. They were, he says, both just before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord without reproach. What do those reply who, preferring consolation for their sins, think a man cannot exist without frequent sins; and use the verse, because it is written in Job: No one is clean from defilement, not even if his life upon earth be but one day?

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ You have heard, O Lord, the prayer of your servant, that I should build a temple for your name:

* Bless and sanctify this house for evermore, O God of Israel.

℣ O Lord, who keep your covenant with your servants who walk before you with their whole heart.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Lesson 3

Those who object must first define what it means for a man to be without sin: whether it is never to have sinned at all, or to have ceased from sinning. For if they think that being without sin means never having sinned at all, I myself agree. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But if they deny that one who has corrected his former error and transformed himself to such a quality of life that he abstains from sin is abstaining from offenses, I cannot agree with their opinion, since we read: So the Lord loved the Church that he might present her to himself glorious, not having spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind, but that she might be holy and without blemish.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Hear, O Lord, the hymn and prayer which your servant prays before you this day, that your eyes may be open, and your ears attentive,

* Over this house day and night.
