Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,

Lowly of heart, our God we pray

That he from harm may keep us free

In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,

Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:

His favouring care our guardian be,

Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin

And folly find no place therein:

Scant need of food, excess denied,

Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,

And night in course shall follow on.

We, free from cares the world affords,

May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the holy Paraclete.

Amen.

23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.

23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.

23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?

23:4 The innocent of hands and the clean of heart, * who has not received his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.

23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.

23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

23:8 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord who is strong and powerful; the Lord powerful in battle.

18:5 Their sound has gone forth through all the earth, * and their words to the ends of the world.

18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun, * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom.

18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way; * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven.

18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit. * Neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.

18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations. * The judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves:

18:11 desirable beyond gold and many precious stones, * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.

18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.

18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please, * along with the meditation of my heart, in your sight, forever,

18:15b O Lord, my helper * and my redeemer.

The Twenty-Second of June. The eighteenth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2027.

Near Nola, a city of Campania, the heavenly birthday of Blessed Paulinus, Bishop and Confessor, who from being most noble and wealthy became poor and lowly for Christ, and, as his final gift, gave himself into servitude to ransom a widow’s son, whom the Vandals, having laid waste Campania, had carried off captive to Africa. He was distinguished not only for learning and the abundant holiness of his life, but also for power against demons; and Saints Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Pope Gregory celebrated his renowned praises in their writings. His body, afterward translated to Benevento and thence to Rome, was finally, by the command of the Supreme Pontiff Pius X, restored to Nola.

At London in England, Saint John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester and Cardinal, who was beheaded for the catholic faith and the primacy of the Roman Pontiff, by the order of King Henry VIII.

On Mount Ararat, the passion of the holy Martyrs of the Ten Thousand, crucified.

At Verulamium in Britain, Saint Alban the Martyr, who, in the time of Diocletian, changed clothes and surrendered himself in place of a clerical guest whom he had received in his home and from whom he had been imbued with the teachings of the Christian faith; and for this reason, after stripes and bitter torments, was beheaded. There suffered also with him one of the soldiers who, as he was leading him to execution, turned to Christ along the way, and was straightway beheaded by the sword, meriting to be baptized in his own blood. This noble contest, endured for God by Saint Alban and his Companion, Saint Bede the Venerable described.

In Samaria in Palestine, the holy Martyrs, one thousand four hundred and eighty, who were slain for the faith of Christ under the Persian king Chosroes.

On the same day, Saint Nicetas, Bishop of Romatiana, illustrious for learning and holy character.

At Naples in Campania, Saint John the Bishop, whom the blessed Paulinus, Bishop of Nola, called to the celestial kingdom.

In the monastery of Cluny in Gaul, the burial of Saint Consortia, Virgin.

At Rome, Blessed Pope Innocent V, of the Order of Preachers, Confessor, who labored with gentle wisdom to defend the liberty of the Church and the concord of Christians. The cult offered to him was ratified and confirmed by Leo XIII, Supreme Pontiff.

Likewise at Rome, the Translation of Saint Flavius Clemens, man of consular rank and Martyr; who, the brother of holy Plautilla and maternal uncle of the blessed Virgin and Martyr Flavia Domitilla, was put to death by the Emperor Domitian, with whom he had held the consulship, for the faith of Christ. Moreover, his body, found in the Basilica of Pope Saint Clement, was there solemnly enshrined.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
