Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,

Lowly of heart, our God we pray

That he from harm may keep us free

In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,

Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:

His favouring care our guardian be,

Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin

And folly find no place therein:

Scant need of food, excess denied,

Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,

And night in course shall follow on.

We, free from cares the world affords,

May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the holy Paraclete.

Amen.

Psalm 23 [1]

23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.

23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.

23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?

23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.

23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way; * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven.

18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations. * The judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves:

18:11 desirable beyond gold and many precious stones, * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.

18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.

18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please, * along with the meditation of my heart, in your sight, forever,

18:15b O Lord, my helper * and my redeemer.

The Sixteenth of March. The eighth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2027.

At Rome, the passion of Saint Cyriacus the Deacon, who, after long torment in prison, drenched with molten pitch and stretched on the rack, also stretched with cords and beaten with rods, was at last, together with Largus, Smaragdus, and twenty others, beheaded by the order of Maximianus. The feast of Saints Cyriacus, Largus, and Smaragdus is commemorated on the eighth of August, the day on which the bodies of these same twenty-three Martyrs were raised up and reverently entombed by the blessed Pope Marcellus.

At Aquileia, the heavenly birthday of Blessed Hilary the Bishop and Tatianus the Deacon, who, under the Emperor Numerianus and the governor Beronius, after the rack and other torments, together with Felix, Largus, and Dionysius, completed their martyrdom.

In Lycaonia, Saint Pappas the Martyr, who, for the faith of Christ, was scourged, lacerated with iron hooks, and ordered to walk in nailed shoes; then, bound to a tree, at the hour of his passing to the Lord, he caused that same tree to yield fruit from being barren.

At Anazarbus in Cilicia, Saint Julian the Martyr, who, under the governor Marcianus, having been tortured for a very long time, was at last enclosed in a sack together with serpents and submerged in the sea.

In the Canadian dominion, the holy Martyrs John de Brébeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Anthony Daniel, Charles Garnier, and Noël Chabanel, Priests of the Society of Jesus, who in the Huron Mission, on this and other days, after many labors and most savage torments, courageously underwent death for Christ.

At Ravenna, Saint Agapitus, Bishop and Confessor.

At Cologne, Saint Heribert the Bishop, renowned for holiness.

At Clermont in Gaul, the burial of Saint Patrick the Bishop.

In Syria, Saint Abraham the Hermit, whose deeds the blessed Ephrem the Deacon wrote.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
