Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?

18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.

℣ Pretiósa in conspéctu Dómini.

Sancta María et omnes Sancti intercédant pro nobis ad Dóminum, ut nos mereámur ab eo adjuvári et salvári, qui vivit et regnat in sǽcula sæculórum.

℟ Amen.

The Nineteenth of January. The eleventh day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2027.

At Rome, on the Cornelian Way, the holy Martyrs Marius and Martha, a married couple, and their sons Audifax and Abachum, Persian nobles, who had come to Rome in the time of the Emperor Claudius for prayer. After enduring beatings, the rack, fire, iron claws, and the cutting off of their hands, Martha was slain at the Nympha; the others were beheaded, and their bodies burned.

Likewise, Saint Canute, King and Martyr.

At Smyrna, the heavenly birthday of blessed Germanicus, Martyr, who, under Marcus Antoninus and Lucius Aurelius, was condemned by the judge while in the flower and beauty of youth. Through the grace of God's power he overcame the fear of bodily frailty and willingly provoked the beast prepared for him. Crushed by its teeth, and dying for the Lord Jesus Christ, he was found worthy to be united in one body with him, the true Bread.

In Africa, the holy Martyrs Paul, Gerontius, Januarius, Saturninus, Successus, Julius, Catus, Pia, and Germana.

At Spoleto, the passion of Saint Pontianus, Martyr, who, in the time of the Emperor Antoninus, was most savagely beaten with rods by the judge Fabianus for Christ's sake, and commanded to walk barefoot over burning coals; but, harmed not at all by the coals, was ordered to be hung on the rack with iron hooks and thrust into prison, where he merited to be comforted by an angelic visitation; and after being exposed to lions and drenched with molten lead, he was finally struck with a sword.

At Lodi in Insubria, Saint Bassian, Bishop and Confessor, who fought strenuously against heretics together with Saint Ambrose.

At Worcester, in England, Saint Wulfstan, Bishop and Confessor, distinguished for merits and miracles, who was enrolled among the Saints by Pope Innocent the Third.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
