Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

22:4 Your rod and your staff, * they have given me consolation.

22:5 You have prepared a table in my sight, * opposite those who trouble me.

22:5 You have anointed my head with oil, * and my cup, which inebriates me, how splendid it is!

22:6 And your mercy will follow me * all the days of my life,

22:6 and so may I dwell in the house of the Lord * for length of days.

71:13 He will spare the poor and the indigent, * and he will bring salvation to the souls of the poor.

71:14 He will redeem their souls from usuries and from iniquity, * and their names shall be honorable in his sight.

71:15 And he will live, and to him will be given from the gold of Arabia, and they will pray concerning him always. * They will bless him all day long.

The Eighth of January. The thirtieth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2027.

At Venice, the burial of Saint Lawrence Justinian, first Patriarch of that city and Confessor. Most abundantly filled with learning and heavenly gifts of divine wisdom, he was numbered among the saints by Pope Alexander VIII. His principal feast is celebrated on September 5, the day on which he ascended the episcopal throne.

At Beauvais in Gaul, the holy martyrs Lucian the Priest, Maximian, and Julian. The last two were put to death by the sword by their persecutors. Blessed Lucian, who had come into Gaul with Saint Denis, was himself severely beaten, and because he did not fear to confess the name of Christ aloud, received the same sentence as his companions.

In Libya, the holy martyrs Theophilus the Deacon and Helladius, who were first torn and pierced with very sharp potsherds, then cast into the fire, and gave their souls back to God.

At Autun, Saint Eugenian, Martyr.

At Hierapolis in Asia, Saint Apollinaris, Bishop, who flourished in holiness and learning under Marcus Antoninus Verus.

At Naples in Campania, the heavenly birthday of Saint Severinus, Bishop, who was the brother of blessed Victorinus, Martyr, and after accomplishing many works of virtue, rested full of holiness.

At Metz in Gaul, Saint Patiens, Bishop.

At Pavia, Saint Maximus, Bishop and Confessor.

At Regensburg in Bavaria, Saint Erhard, Bishop.

Among the people of Noricum, Saint Severinus, Abbot, who spread the Gospel among that people and was called their Apostle. His body was brought by divine providence to Lucullanum near Naples in Campania, and was afterwards transferred from there to the monastery of Saint Severinus.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
