Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

The First of January. The twenty-third day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2027.

The Octave of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Circumcision of the same, our Lord Jesus Christ.

At Caesarea in Cappadocia, the burial of Saint Basil, called the Great, Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church. In the time of the Emperor Valens, distinguished by learning and wisdom and adorned with every virtue, he shone wonderfully and defended the Church against the Arians and Macedonians with unshakable constancy. His principal feast is celebrated on June 14, the day on which he was ordained bishop.

At Mount Senario in Tuscany, the heavenly birthday of Saint Bonfilius, Confessor, one of the seven founders of the Order of Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Having venerated her with great devotion, he was suddenly called by her into heaven. His feast and that of his companions is celebrated on February 12.

At Rome, Saint Almachius, Martyr. Because he said, “Today is the octave of the Lord’s feast; cease your idolatrous superstitions and polluted sacrifices,” he was killed by gladiators at the command of Alypius, prefect of the city.

Also at Rome, on the Appian Way, the crowning of thirty holy soldiers as martyrs under the Emperor Diocletian.

At Spoleto, Saint Concordius, Priest and Martyr. In the time of the Emperor Antoninus he was first beaten with clubs, then suspended on the rack, and afterwards worn down in prison, where he was strengthened by an angelic visitation; at last he was slain with the sword.

On the same day, Saint Magnus, Martyr.

In Africa, blessed Fulgentius, Bishop of the Church of Ruspe. During the Vandal persecution he suffered much from the Arians for his Catholic faith and outstanding learning, and was exiled to Sardinia. At last, allowed to return to his own church, he rested in a holy death, renowned for his life and teaching.

At Chieti in Abruzzo Citeriore, the heavenly birthday of Saint Justin, Bishop of that city, renowned for the holiness of his life and for miracles.

In the territory of Lyon, at the monastery in the Jura, Saint Eugendus, Abbot, whose life shone with an abundance of virtues and miracles.

At Souvigny in Gaul, Saint Odilo, Abbot of Cluny. He was the first to command that the commemoration of all the faithful departed be held in his monasteries on the day immediately after the feast of All Saints; the universal Church later accepted and approved this observance.

At Rome, the heavenly birthday of Saint Vincent Mary Strambi, Bishop of Macerata and Tolentino, a member of the Congregation of the Cross and Passion of Jesus, renowned for his pastoral zeal, whom Pope Pius XII numbered among the saints.

At Alexandria, the burial of Saint Euphrosyne, Virgin, who was renowned in her monastery for the virtue of abstinence and for miracles.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.
