Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

The Thirtieth of December. The twenty-first day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

At Rome, the heavenly birthday of Saint Felix I, Pope and Martyr, who governed the Church under the Emperor Aurelian. His feast, however, is celebrated on May 30.

At Spoleto, likewise the heavenly birthday of the holy Martyrs Sabinus, Bishop of Assisi; Exsuperantius and Marcellus, Deacons; and the governor Venustianus with his wife and children, under the Emperor Maximian. Of these, Marcellus and Exsuperantius were first suspended on the rack, then grievously beaten with clubs, and finally scraped with claws and burned on their sides, completing their martyrdom. Not long afterwards, Venustianus was slain with the sword together with his wife and children. Saint Sabinus, after his hands had been cut off and he had been afflicted in prison for a long time, was beaten to death. Though their martyrdom occurred at different times, it is commemorated on one day.

At Alexandria, the holy Martyrs Mansuetus, Severus, Appianus, Donatus, Honorius, and their companions.

At Thessalonica, Saint Anysia, Martyr.

In the same place, Saint Anysius, Bishop of that city.

At Milan, Saint Eugenius, Bishop and Confessor.

At Ravenna, Saint Liberius, Bishop.

At Aquila among the Vestini, Saint Rainerius, Bishop.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
