Ant. Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.
Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos, quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam: quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.
Ant.

Ant. Veníte, adorémus.
Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi: Semper hi errant corde, ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas: quibus jurávi in ira mea: Si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Ant. The Lord, King of Martyrs, * come, let us adore.
Ant. The Lord, King of Martyrs, * come, let us adore.
Come, let us exult in the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to God, our Savior. Let us anticipate his presence with confession, and let us sing joyfully to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, King of Martyrs, * come, let us adore.
For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all gods. For the Lord will not drive away his people. For in his hand are all the limits of the earth, and he beholds the heights of the mountains.
Ant. come, let us adore.
For the sea is his, and he made it, and his hands established the dry land. (kneel) Come, let us adore and fall prostrate before God, and let us weep before the Lord who made us. For he is the Lord our God, and we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Ant. The Lord, King of Martyrs, * come, let us adore.
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness, where your fathers tempted me; they tested and saw my works.
Ant. come, let us adore.
For forty years, I was near to that generation, and I said: These have always strayed in heart. But they have not known my ways. To them I swore in my wrath: They shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, King of Martyrs, * come, let us adore.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. come, let us adore.
Ant. The Lord, King of Martyrs, * come, let us adore.
Hymnus
Audit tyránnus ánxius
Adésse regum Príncipem,
Qui nomen Israël regat,
Teneátque David régiam.
Exclámat amens núntio:
Succéssor instat, péllimur:
Satélles, i, ferrum rape,
Perfúnde cunas sánguine.
Quid próficit tantum nefas?
Quid crimen Heródem juvat?
Unus tot inter fúnera
Impúne Christus tóllitur.
Jesu, tibi sit glória,
Qui natus es de Vírgine,
Cum Patre et almo Spíritu,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
With terror doth the tyrant hear
The King of kings hath come to dwell
Where David's court shall widely rear
A sceptered reign o'er Israel.
Then cries out, raging, at the word:
“He comes to stand where we have stood:
Hence, soldier, and with ruthless sword
Deluge the cradles deep with blood!”
What profiteth a crime so dread?
What hope shall Herod's bosom sway?
Alone amidst the thronging dead,
The Christ is safely borne away!
Jesus, to you be glory,
Who were born of the Virgin,
With the Father and the loving Spirit,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

Nam, sicut sacratíssimum præséntis diéi festum maniféstat, quantum in beátos párvulos iníquitas abundávit, tantum in eis grátia benedictiónis refúdit.
℣ Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟ Deo grátias.
℟ Effudérunt sánguinem Sanctórum velut aquam in circúitu Jerúsalem:
* Et non erat qui sepelíret.
℣ Posuérunt mortália servórum tuórum escas volatílibus cæli, carnes sanctórum tuórum béstiis terræ.
℟ Et non erat qui sepelíret.
℣ Jube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 5
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 6
Aliórum quidem pretiósa mors Mártyrum laudem in confessióne proméruit, horum in consummatióne complácuit; quia incipiéntis vitæ primórdiis, ipse eis occásus inítium glóriæ dedit, qui præséntis términum impósuit. Quos Heródis impíetas lactántes matrum ubéribus abstráxit; qui jure dicúntur Mártyrum flores, quos in médio frígore infidelitátis exórtos, velut primas erumpéntes Ecclésiæ gemmas, quædam persecutiónis pruína decóxit.

Nocturn I
Ant. Beside running waters * he planted the vineyard of the just, and their will was with the law of the Lord.
Psalm 1 [1]
1:1 Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, † and has not remained in the way of sinners, * and has not sat in the chair of pestilence.
1:2 But his will is with the law of the Lord, * and he will meditate on his law, day and night.
1:3a And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, * which will provide its fruit in its time,
1:3b and its leaf will not fall away, * and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper.
1:4 Not so the impious, not so. * For they are like the dust that the wind casts away from the face of the earth.
1:5 Therefore, the impious will not rise again in judgment, * nor sinners in the council of the just.
1:6 For the Lord knows the way of the just. * And the path of the impious will pass away.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. Beside running waters he planted the vineyard of the just, and their will was with the law of the Lord.
Ant. As gold * in a furnace the Lord tried his chosen ones, and as a burnt offering he received them for ever.
Psalm 2 [2]
2:1 Why have the Gentiles been seething, * and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
2:2 The kings of the earth have stood up, and the leaders have joined together as one, * against the Lord and against his Christ:
2:3 “Let us shatter their chains * and cast their yoke away from us.”
2:4 He who dwells in heaven will ridicule them, * and the Lord will mock them.
2:5 Then will he speak to them in his anger * and trouble them with his fury.
2:6 Yet I have been appointed king by him over Zion, his holy mountain, * preaching his decree.
2:7 The Lord has said to me: * You are my son, this day have I begotten you.
2:8 Ask of me and I will give to you: the Gentiles for your inheritance, * and the ends of the earth for your possession.
2:9 You will rule them with an iron rod, * and you will shatter them like a potter’s vessel.
2:10 And now, O kings, understand. * Receive instruction, you who judge the earth.
2:11 Serve the Lord in fear, * and exult in him with trembling.
2:12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord might become angry, * and you would perish from the right way.
2:13 When his wrath soon flares up, * blessed are all those who trust in him.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. As gold in a furnace the Lord tried his chosen ones, and as a burnt offering he received them for ever.
Ant. If in the sight of men * they suffered torments, the hope of the chosen is immortal for ever.
Psalm 3 [3]
3:2 Lord, why have those who trouble me been multiplied? * Many rise up against me.
3:3 Many say to my soul, * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”
3:4 But you, Lord, are my supporter, * my glory, and the one who raises up my head.
3:5 I have cried out to the Lord with my voice, * and he has heard me from his holy mountain.
3:6 I have slept, and I have fallen asleep. * But I awakened because the Lord has sustained me.
3:7 I will not fear the thousands of people surrounding me. * Rise up, Lord. Save me, my God.
3:8 For you have struck all those who oppose me without cause. * You have broken the teeth of sinners.
3:9 Salvation is of the Lord, * and your blessing is upon your people.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. If in the sight of men they suffered torments, the hope of the chosen is immortal for ever.
℣ Rejoice in the Lord and exult, you just ones.
℟ And glory, all you upright of heart.
The Our Father is said silently as far as And lead us not into temptation:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:
℣ And lead us not into temptation:
℟ But deliver us from evil.
Absolution. Hear the prayers of your servants, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on us: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Lesson 1
From the Prophet Jeremiah
Jeremiah 31:15-17
15 Thus says the Lord: A voice has been heard on high, of lamentation, mourning, and weeping; of Rachel crying for her sons and refusing to be consoled over them, because they are not.
16 Thus says the Lord: Let your voice cease from crying and your eyes from tears. For there is a reward for your work, says the Lord. And they will return from the land of the enemy.
17 And there is hope for your very end, says the Lord. And the sons will return to their own borders.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ The hundred and forty-four thousand who were purchased from the earth, these are they who were not defiled with women:
* For they remained virgins, and therefore they reign with God, and the Lamb of God is with them.
℣ These are they who have come out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.
℟ For they remained virgins, and therefore they reign with God, and the Lamb of God is with them.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 2
Ier 31:18-20
18 Listening, I heard Ephraim going into captivity: 'You have chastised me, and I was instructed, like a young untamed bull. Convert me, and I shall be converted. For you are the Lord my God.
19 For after you converted me, I did penance. And after you revealed to me, I struck my thigh. I am confounded and ashamed. For I have endured the disgrace of my youth.'
20 Certainly, Ephraim is an honorable son to me; surely, he is a tender child. For since I spoke about him, I will still remember him.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ Beneath the altar of God I heard the voices of the slain saying:
* Why do you not avenge our blood? And they received a divine answer: Wait yet a little while, until the number of your brethren is complete.
℣ I saw beneath the altar of God the souls of those slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held, and they cried out with a loud voice, saying.
℟ Why do you not avenge our blood? And they received a divine answer: Wait yet a little while, until the number of your brethren is complete.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds and hearts.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 3
Ier 31:21-23
21 Establish a watchtower for yourself. Place yourself in bitterness. Direct your heart into the upright way, in which you used to walk. Return, return, O virgin of Israel, to these your cities!
22 How long will you be absorbed in delights, O wandering daughter? For the Lord has created something new upon the earth: a woman will encompass a man.
23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Still they will speak this word in the land of Judah, and in its cities, when I will convert their captivity: 'May the Lord bless you, the beauty of justice, the holy mountain.'
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ They adored him who lives for ever and ever,
* Casting their crowns before the throne of the Lord their God.
℣ And they fell on their faces before the throne: and they blessed him who lives for ever and ever.
℟ Casting their crowns before the throne of the Lord their God.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Casting their crowns before the throne of the Lord their God.

Ant. I will give to my Saints * an appointed place in the Kingdom of my Father, says the Lord.
Psalm 14 [4]
14:1 O Lord, who will dwell in your tabernacle? * Or who will rest on your holy mountain?
14:2 He who walks without blemish * and who works justice.
14:3a He who speaks the truth in his heart, * who has not acted deceitfully with his tongue,
14:3b and has not done evil to his neighbor, * and has not taken up a reproach against his neighbors.
14:4a In his sight, the malicious one has been reduced to nothing, * but he glorifies those who fear the Lord.
14:4b He who swears to his neighbor and does not deceive. * (5a) He who has not given his money in usury, nor accepted bribes against the innocent.
14:5b He who does these things * will be undisturbed for eternity.

15:3 As for the saints, who are in his land: * he has made all my desires wonderful in them.
15:4a Their infirmities have been multiplied; * after this, they acted more quickly.
15:4b I will not gather for their convocations of blood, * nor will I remember their names with my lips.
15:5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup. * It is you who will restore my inheritance to me.
15:6 The measuring lines have fallen for me in splendid places. * And, indeed, my inheritance is splendid to me.
15:7 I will bless the Lord, who has bestowed understanding upon me. * Moreover, my temperament has also corrected me, even through the night.
15:8 I have kept the Lord always in my sight. * For he is at my right hand, so that I may not be disturbed.
15:9 Because of this, my heart has been joyful, and my tongue has exulted. * Moreover, even my body will rest in hope.
15:10 For you will not abandon my soul to the underworld, * nor will you allow your holy one to see corruption.
15:11 You have made known to me the ways of life; † you will fill me with joy by your countenance. * At your right hand are delights, even to the end.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. As for the saints, who are in his land: he has made all my desires wonderful in them.
Ant. The holy ones who hope in the Lord * shall have strength; they shall take wings as eagles, they shall fly, and shall not grow weary.
Psalm 23 [6]
23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.
23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.
23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?
23:4 The innocent of hands and the clean of heart, * who has not received his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.
23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.
23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.
23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.
23:8 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord who is strong and powerful; the Lord powerful in battle.
23:9 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.
23:10 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord of hosts. He himself is the King of Glory.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Lesson 4
Sermon of Saint Augustine, Bishop
Sermon 10 on the Saints
Today, dearest brethren, we honor the nativity of those infants whom the text of the Gospel declares were slain by Herod, that most cruel king. And therefore let the earth rejoice with the greatest exultation, as the fruitful parent of so many heavenly soldiers and such great virtues. Behold, the profane enemy could never have benefited those blessed little ones so much by his service as he profited them by his hatred. For, as the most sacred feast of the present day shows, the more iniquity abounded toward those blessed little ones, the more the grace of blessing overflowed in them.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ They poured out the blood of the saints like water all around Jerusalem:
* and there was no one to bury them.
℣ They have placed the dead bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your saints for the beasts of the earth.
℟ and there was no one to bury them.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 5
Blessed are you, O land of Bethlehem of Judah, who endured the cruelty of King Herod in the slaughter of the children: who merited at one time to offer to God a white-robed people of defenseless infancy. Yet we rightly celebrate their nativity, those whom the world brought forth to eternal life more blessedly than their mothers' wombs brought them into this life. For indeed they attained the dignity of perpetual life before they received the enjoyment of the present one.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ These are the Saints who suffered for you, O Lord; avenge them,
* for they cry out to you every day.
℣ Avenge, O Lord, the blood of your Saints, which has been shed.
℟ for they cry out to you every day.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 6
The precious death of other Martyrs earned praise in the confession; that of these pleased in its completion; because at the very outset of a life just beginning, the very death that ended their present life gave them the beginning of glory. Those whom the impiety of Herod tore from their mothers' nursing breasts; who are rightly called the flowers of the Martyrs, whom, springing up in the midst of the cold of unbelief like the first bursting buds of the Church, a certain frost of persecution nipped.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ These are the ones who have not defiled their garments:
* They shall walk with me in white, because they are worthy.
℣ These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are Virgins.
℟ They shall walk with me in white, because they are worthy.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ They shall walk with me in white, because they are worthy.
Nocturn III
Ant. But the just * shall live for ever, and their reward is with the Lord.
Psalm 32 [7]
32:1 Exult in the Lord, you just ones; * praise befits the upright.
32:2 Confess to the Lord with stringed instruments; * sing psalms to him with the psaltery, the instrument of ten strings.
32:3 Sing to him a new song. * Sing psalms to him skillfully, with loud exclamation.
32:4 For the word of the Lord is upright, * and all his works are in faith.
32:5 He loves mercy and judgment. * The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
32:6 By the word of the Lord, the heavens were established, * and all their power, by the Spirit of his mouth:
32:7 gathering together the waters of the sea, as if in a container, * placing the depths in storage.
32:8 Let all the earth fear the Lord, * and may all the inhabitants of the world quake before him.
32:9 For he spoke, and they became. * He commanded, and they were created.
32:10 The Lord scatters the counsels of the nations. * Moreover, he reproves the thoughts of the people, and he rejects the counsels of the leaders.
32:11 But the counsel of the Lord remains for eternity, * the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.
32:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, * the people whom he has chosen as his inheritance.
32:13 The Lord has looked down from heaven. * He has seen all the sons of men.
32:14 From his well-prepared dwelling place, * he has gazed upon all who dwell on the earth.
32:15 He has formed the hearts of each one of them; * he understands all their works.
32:16 The king is not saved by great power, * nor will the giant be saved by his many powers.
32:17 The horse is false safety; * for he will not be saved by the abundance of his powers.
32:18 Behold, the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him * and on those who hope in his mercy,
32:19 so as to rescue their souls from death * and to feed them during famine.
32:20 Our soul waits for the Lord. * For he is our helper and protector.
32:21 For in him, our heart will rejoice, * and in his holy name, we have hoped.
32:22 Let your mercy be upon us, O Lord, * just as we have hoped in you.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. But the just shall live for ever, and their reward is with the Lord.
Ant. These are they who have come * out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.
Psalm 33 [8]
33:2 I will bless the Lord at all times. * His praise will be ever in my mouth.
33:3 In the Lord, my soul will be praised. * May the meek listen and rejoice.
33:4 Magnify the Lord with me, * and let us extol his name together.
33:5 I sought the Lord, and he heeded me, * and he carried me away from all my tribulations.
33:6 Approach him and be enlightened, * and your faces will not be confounded.
33:7 This poor one cried out, and the Lord heeded him, * and he saved him from all his tribulations.
33:8 The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear him, * and he will rescue them.
33:9 Taste and see that the Lord is sweet. * Blessed is the man who hopes in him.
33:10 Fear the Lord, all you his saints. * For there is no destitution for those who fear him.
33:11 The rich have been needy and hungry, * but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good thing.
33:12 Come forward, sons. Listen to me. * I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
33:13 Which is the man who wills life, * who chooses to see good days?
33:14 Prohibit your tongue from evil * and your lips from speaking deceit.
33:15 Turn away from evil, and do good. * Seek peace, and pursue it.
33:16 The eyes of the Lord are on the just, * and his ears are with their prayers.
33:17 But the countenance of the Lord is upon those who do evil, * to destroy the remembrance of them from the earth.
33:18 The just cried out, and the Lord heard them, * and he freed them from all their tribulations.
33:19 The Lord is near to those who are troubled in heart, * and he will save the humble in spirit.
33:20 Many are the afflictions of the just, * but from them all the Lord will free them.
33:21 The Lord preserves all of their bones, * not one of them shall be broken.
33:22 The death of sinners is most evil, * and those who hate the just will be guilty.
33:23 The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants, * and none of those who hope in him will be guilty.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. These are they who have come out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.
Ant. Behold, the reward * of the Saints is abundant with God; though they died for Christ, they shall live for ever.
Psalm 45 [9]
45:2 Our God is our refuge and strength, * a helper in the tribulations that have greatly overwhelmed us.
45:3 Because of this, we will not be afraid when the earth will be turbulent * and the mountains will be transferred into the heart of the sea.
45:4 They thundered, and the waters were stirred up among them; * the mountains have been disturbed by his strength.
45:5 The rushing of the river rejoices the city of God. * The Most High has sanctified his tabernacle.
45:6 God is in its midst; it will not be shaken. * God will assist it in the early morning.
45:7 The peoples have been disturbed, and the kingdoms have been bowed down. * He uttered his voice: the earth has been moved.
45:8 The Lord of hosts is with us. * The God of Jacob is our supporter.
45:9 Draw near and behold the works of the Lord: what portents he has set upon the earth, * carrying away wars even to the end of the earth.
45:10 He will crush the bow and break the weapons, * and he will burn the shield with fire.
45:11 Be still, and see that I am God. * I will be exalted among the peoples, and I will be exalted upon the earth.
45:12 The Lord of hosts is with us. * The God of Jacob is our supporter.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. Behold, the reward of the Saints is abundant with God; though they died for Christ, they shall live for ever.
℣ But the just shall live for ever.
℟ And their reward is with the Lord.
Absolution. May the almighty and merciful Lord absolve us from the bonds of our sins.
℟ Amen.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the evangelical reading be our salvation and protection.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 7
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matthew 2:13-18
At that time: An Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Rise up, and take the Child and his Mother, and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I tell you. And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Jerome, Priest.
Commentary on Matthew, book 1, chapter 2, and in the Ordinary Gloss
When he took the Child and his Mother to pass over into Egypt, he took them by night and in darkness: because he left the night of ignorance to the unbelievers from whom he departed. But when he returns to Judea, neither night nor darkness is mentioned in the Gospel: because at the end of the world the Jews, receiving the faith as they welcome Christ returning from Egypt, will be enlightened.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ The Saints sang a new canticle before the throne of God and the Lamb:
* And the earth resounded with their voices.
℣ These were purchased from among men as first fruits to God and to the Lamb, and in their mouths no falsehood was found.
℟ And the earth resounded with their voices.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May they whose feast we celebrate intercede for us to the Lord.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 8
That what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: Out of Egypt I have called my Son. Let those answer who deny the truth of the Hebrew books as to where this is to be read in the Seventy translators. When they cannot find it, we shall tell them that it is written in the prophet Hosea, as the copies we have recently published can confirm.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ I saw beneath the altar of God the souls of those slain for the word of God which they held, and they cried out with a clear voice:
* Avenge, O Lord, the blood of your Saints, which has been shed.
℣ Beneath the throne of God all the Saints cry out.
℟ Avenge, O Lord, the blood of your Saints, which has been shed.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Avenge, O Lord, the blood of your Saints, which has been shed.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.
℟ Amen.
Lesson 9
Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying: A voice was heard in Rama, weeping and much wailing, Rachel weeping for her children. Now Benjamin was born of Rachel, and Bethlehem is not in the tribe of Benjamin. It is therefore asked how Rachel weeps for the sons of Judah — that is, those of Bethlehem — as though for her own. We shall answer briefly: because she was buried near Bethlehem in Ephrata, and because her maternal body rested there, she received the name of mother; or because Judah and Benjamin were two joined tribes, and Herod had commanded that the children be slain not only in Bethlehem but in all its borders.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
Te Deum
O God, we praise you; * O Lord, we acclaim you.
Eternal Father, * all the earth reveres you.
To you all the Angels, * the heavens and all the Powers of heaven:
To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * cry out in endless praise:
(A bow is made) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of hosts;
Heaven and earth are filled * with the majesty of your glory.
The glorious choir of Apostles * sings to you,
the noble company of Prophets * praises you,
the white-robed army of Martyrs * glorifies you.
Holy Church throughout the earth * proclaims you,
the Father * of boundless majesty;
your true and only Son, * worthy of adoration;
and the Holy Spirit, * the Paraclete.
You, O Christ, * are the King of glory.
You are * the Father's everlasting Son.
(A bow is made) When you resolved to save the human race, * you did not spurn the Virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death * and opened the Kingdom of Heaven to those who put their faith in you.
You are seated at the right hand of God * in the glory of the Father.
We believe you are the Judge * who is to come.
(The following verse is said kneeling) And so we beg you, help your servants, * redeemed by your most precious blood.
Number them * among your Saints in eternal glory.
Save your people, Lord, * and bless your inheritance.
Shepherd them * and raise them to eternal life.
Day by day * we bless you,
(A bow is made, according to custom) and we praise your name * for endless ages evermore.
Be gracious, Lord, on this day, * and keep us from all sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, * have mercy.
May your mercy be upon us, Lord, * as we place our trust in you.
In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: * let me never be put to shame.
The rest is omitted unless Lauds is said separately.

O God, whose praise the Holy Innocents confessed on this day not by speaking but by dying: put to death in us all the evil of our vices; that our life may also confess by its conduct the faith which our tongue proclaims.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son: who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
℟ Amen.
