Hymnus
Jam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.
Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.
Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.
Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Ejúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Now that the sun has risen,
Let us humbly pray to God,
That in our daily actions
He may keep us from all harm.
May he hold back and bridle the tongue,
Lest the din of strife ring out:
May he guard the eyes with care,
Lest they drink in vanities.
Let the depths of the heart be pure,
And let folly be far away;
May sparing use of food and drink
Curb the pride of the flesh.
That when the day shall pass away
And fortune bring back the night,
Pure through abstinence,
We may ourselves sing his glory.
To God the Father be glory,
And to his only Son,
With the Spirit the Paraclete,
Now and through every age.
Amen.

The Twenty-Third of December. The fourteenth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.
At Rome, Saint Victoria, Virgin and Martyr, who, in the persecution of the Emperor Decius, having been betrothed to the pagan Eugenius and wishing neither to marry nor to sacrifice, after many miracles by which she had gathered very many virgins to God, was struck in the heart by the sword of the executioner at her betrothed's request.
At Nicomedia, the passion of Saints Migdonius and Mardonius, of whom the one, in the persecution of Diocletian, was consumed by fire, and the other perished, cast into a pit. At that time also the Deacon of Saint Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedia, suffered; who, as he was carrying letters to the Martyrs, was seized by the Gentiles, and, crushed with stones, passed to the Lord.
There also, the heavenly birthday of twenty holy Martyrs, whom that very Diocletianic persecution, having tortured them with most grievous torments, made Martyrs of Christ.
In Crete, the holy Martyrs Theodulus, Saturninus, Euporus, Gelasius, Eunicianus, Zeticus, Leominus, Agathopodes, Basilides, and Evaristus; who, in the persecution of Decius, endured cruel sufferings and were beheaded.
At Rome, Blessed Servulus, who (as the holy Pope Gregory writes), from the first years of his life to his end, lay paralytic in the porch near the church of Saint Clement, and at length, invited by the singing of Angels, passed to the glory of paradise; at whose tomb God most frequently wrought miracles.
℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.
℟ The death of his Saints.
May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
℟ Amen.
