Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

107:6 Exaltáre super cælos, Deus, et super omnem terram glória tua: * ut liberéntur dilécti tui.

107:7 Salvum fac déxtera tua, et exáudi me: * Deus locútus est in sancto suo:

107:8 Exsultábo, et dívidam Síchimam, * et convállem tabernaculórum dimétiar.

107:9 Meus est Gálaad, et meus est Manásses: * et Éphraim suscéptio cápitis mei.

Psalm 93(1-11) [1]

93:1 The Lord is the God of retribution. * The God of retribution has acted freely.

93:2 Lift yourself up, for you judge the earth. * Repay the arrogant with retribution.

93:3 How long will sinners, O Lord, * how long will sinners glory?

93:4 How long will they utter and speak iniquity? * How long will all who work injustice speak out?

93:5 They have humiliated your people, O Lord, * and they have harassed your inheritance.

93:6 They have executed the widow and the new arrival, * and they have slaughtered the orphan.

93:7 And they have said, “The Lord will not see, * nor will the God of Jacob understand.”

93:8 Understand, you senseless ones among the people. * And be wise at last, you foolish ones.

93:9 He who formed the ear, will he not hear? * And he who forged the eye, does he not look closely?

93:10 He who chastises nations, will he not rebuke, * he who teaches man knowledge?

93:11 The Lord knows the thoughts of men: * that these are in vain.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 93(12-23) [2]

93:12 Blessed is the man whom you will instruct, O Lord. * And you will teach him from your law.

93:13 So may you soothe him from the evil days, * until a pit may be dug for sinners.

93:14 For the Lord will not drive away his people, * and he will not abandon his inheritance,

93:15 even until the time when justice is being converted into judgment, * and when those who are close to justice are all those who are upright of heart.

93:16 Who will rise up with me against the malignant? * Or who will stand with me against the workers of iniquity?

93:17 Except that the Lord assisted me, * my soul almost would have dwelt in Hell.

93:18 If ever I said, “My foot is slipping,” * then your mercy, O Lord, assisted me.

93:19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, * your consolations have given joy to my soul.

93:20 Does the seat of iniquity adhere to you, * you who contrive hardship within a commandment?

93:21 They will hunt down the soul of the just, * and they will condemn innocent blood.

93:22 And the Lord has been made into a refuge for me, * and my God into the assistance of my hope.

93:23 And he will repay them their iniquity, and he will destroy them in their malice. * The Lord our God will utterly destroy them.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 107 [3]

107:2 My heart is prepared, O God, my heart is prepared. * I will sing songs, and I will sing psalms in my glory.

107:3 Rise up, my glory. Rise up, Psalter and harp. * I will arise in early morning.

107:4 I will confess to you, O Lord, among the peoples. * And I will sing psalms to you among the nations.

107:5 For your mercy is great, beyond the heavens, * and your truth, even to the clouds.

107:6 Be exalted, O God, beyond the heavens, and your glory, beyond all the earth, * so that your beloved may be freed.

107:7 Save with your right hand, and heed me. * God has spoken in his holiness.

107:8 I will exult, and I will divide Shechem, * and I will divide by measure the steep valley of tabernacles.

107:9 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine, * and Ephraim is the supporter of my head.

107:10 Judah is my king. * Moab is the cooking pot of my hope.

107:10 I will extend my shoe in Idumea; * the foreigners have become my friends.

107:11 Who will lead me into the fortified city? * Who will lead me, even into Idumea?

107:12 Will not you, O God, who had rejected us? * And will not you, O God, go out with our armies?

107:13 Grant us help from tribulation, * for vain is the help of man.

107:14 In God, we will act virtuously, * and he will bring our enemies to nothing.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. Behold, in the clouds of heaven the Lord will come with great power, alleluia.

The Thirteenth of December. The fourth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

At Syracuse, in Sicily, the heavenly birthday of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr, in the persecution of Diocletian. This noble Virgin, when the pimps to whom she had been handed over by order of Paschasius, a man of consular rank, so that the people might mock her chastity wished to take her away, could in no way be moved by them, even with ropes attached and many teams of oxen; then, suffering no harm from pitch, resin, and boiling oil, she was at last struck with the sword in the throat and completed her martyrdom.

At Moulins, in Gaul, likewise the heavenly birthday of Saint Jane Frances Frémiot de Chantal, Widow, who was the Foundress of the Order of the Nuns of the Visitation of Holy Mary; distinguished by nobility of birth, the holiness of life which she constantly led in four states of life, and the gift of miracles, she was included in the number of the Saints by Pope Clement XIII. Her sacred body was translated to Annecy, in Savoy, and solemnly entombed in the first church of her Order. Her feast was appointed by Pope Clement XIV to be celebrated by the whole Church on the twenty-first of August.

In Armenia, the passion of the holy Martyrs Eustratius, Auxentius, Eugenius, Mardarius, and Orestes, in the persecution of Diocletian. Of these, Eustratius, first under Lysias, then at Sebaste under the Governor Agricolaus, was tortured with Orestes by elaborate torments and cast into a furnace and gave up his spirit; Orestes was placed upon a burning iron bed and passed to the Lord; the rest, at Arabraca, tormented by most cruel punishments under the Governor Lysias, completed their martyrdom in various ways. Their bodies, later translated to Rome, were placed with honor in the church of Saint Apollinaris.

In the island of Sulcis, near Sardinia, the passion of Saint Antiochus, under the Emperor Hadrian.

At Cambrai, in Gaul, Saint Autbert, Bishop and Confessor.

In the district of Ponthieu, in Gaul, Saint Judocus, Priest and Confessor.

In the territory of Strasbourg, Saint Odilia, Virgin.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
