Thou heavenly, new Jerusalem,
Vision of peace in prophet's dream!
With living stones built up on high,
And rising to yon starry sky;
In bridal pomp thy form is crowned,
With thousand thousand angels round!
O bride, betrothed in happy hour,
The Father's glory is thy dower;
The bridegroom's grace is shed on thee
Thou queen all fair eternally;
To Christ allied, thy Prince adored,
Bright shining city of the Lord!
Behold with pearls they glittering stand
thy peaceful gates to all expand;
By grace and strength divinely shed
Each mortal thither may be led;
Who, kindled by Christ's love, will dare
All earthly sufferings now to bear.
By many a salutary stroke,
By many a weary blow that broke,
Or polished with a workman's skill,
The stones that form that glorious pile,
They all are fitly framed to lie
In their appointed place on high.
Fair and well pleasing in thy sight,
Parent most high, enthroned in light,
And for thine only Son most meet,
And thee, all-glorious Paraclete,
To whom praise, power, and glory rise
Forever through the eternal skies.
Amen.

Psalm 87
87:2 O Lord, God of my salvation: * I have cried out, day and night, in your presence.
87:3 Let my prayer enter in your sight. * Incline your ear to my petition.
87:4 For my soul has been filled with evils, * and my life has drawn near to Hell.
87:5 I am considered to be among those who will descend into the pit. * I have become like a man without assistance, idle among the dead.
87:6 I am like the wounded sleeping in sepulchers, whom you no longer remember, * and who have been repelled by your hand.
87:7 They have lain me in the lower pit: * in dark places and in the shadow of death.
87:8 Your fury has been confirmed over me. * And you have brought all your waves upon me.
87:9 You have sent my acquaintances far from me. * They have set me as an abomination to themselves.
87:9 I was handed over, yet I did not depart. * My eyes languished before destitution.
87:10 All day long, I cried out to you, O Lord. * I stretched out my hands to you.
87:11 Will you perform wonders for the dead? * Or will physicians raise to life, and so confess to you?
87:12 Could anyone declare your mercy in the sepulcher, * or your truth from within perdition?
87:13 Will your wonders be known in the darkness, * or your justice in the land of oblivion?
87:14 And I have cried out to you, O Lord, * and in early morning, my prayer will come before you.
87:15 Lord, why do you reject my prayer? * Why do you turn your face away from me?
87:16 I am poor, and I have been amid hardships from my youth. * And, though I have been exalted, I am humbled and disturbed.
87:17 Your wrath has crossed into me, * and your terrors have disturbed me.
87:18 They have surrounded me like water, all day long. * They have surrounded me, all at once.
87:19 Friend and neighbor, * and my acquaintances, you have sent far away from me, away from misery.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. Jacob erected a stone as a pillar, pouring oil upon it from above.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:
℣ And lead us not into temptation:

Ritus, quos in consecrándis ecclésiis et altáribus Romána servat Ecclésia, beátus Silvéster Papa primus instítuit. The rites that the Roman Church observes in the consecration of churches and altars were first instituted by blessed Pope Sylvester. For although from the time of the Apostles there had already been places dedicated to God, which some called oratories and others churches, where assemblies were held on the first day of the week, and the Christian people were accustomed to pray, to hear the word of God, and to receive the Eucharist; these were not yet consecrated with so solemn a rite, nor had there yet been erected within them an altar raised as a title, which, anointed with chrism, would express the figure of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our altar, our Victim, and our Priest.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ For those praying in this place,
Forgive the sins of your people, O God, and show them the good way by which they shall walk, and give glory in this place.
℣ Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who are enthroned upon the Cherubim.
℟ Forgive the sins of your people, O God, and show them the good way by which they shall walk, and give glory in this place.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.
℟ Amen.

Nam, et in suo Lateranénsi palátio ecclésiam Salvatóri dedicávit, et ei continéntem basílicam nómine sancti Ioánnis Baptístæ cóndidit, eo loco quo ipse, baptizátus a sancto Silvéstro, ab infidelitátis lepra mundátus est; quam idem Póntifex consecrávit quinto idus novémbris. But when the Emperor Constantine obtained health and salvation through the sacrament of Baptism, then for the first time, by a law promulgated by him, it was permitted throughout the whole world for Christians to build churches; and he encouraged them to this sacred building not only by edict but also by his own example. For he both dedicated a church to the Savior in his Lateran palace, and adjoined to it a basilica in the name of Saint John the Baptist, in that place where he himself, baptized by Saint Sylvester, was cleansed of the leprosy of unbelief; and the same Pontiff consecrated it on the fifth day before the Ides of November. The memory of this consecration is celebrated on this present day, on which for the first time at Rome a church was publicly consecrated, and the image of the Savior, depicted on the wall, appeared to the Roman people.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ O how awesome is this place:
Truly this is none other than the house of God and the gate of heaven.
℣ This is the house of the Lord, firmly built, well founded upon a solid rock.
℟ Truly this is none other than the house of God and the gate of heaven.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.
℟ Amen.

If, however, blessed Silvester afterward decreed in the consecration of the altar of the Prince of the Apostles that henceforth altars should be built only of stone, nonetheless the altar of the Lateran basilica was erected of wood. This is not surprising; for since from Saint Peter until Silvester, on account of the persecutions, the Pontiffs were unable to remain in a fixed place, wherever necessity had driven them, whether into crypts or cemeteries or the houses of the pious, they offered the sacred rites upon that wooden altar, hollow in the likeness of an ark. Saint Silvester, when peace was restored to the Church, placed that altar in honor of the Prince of the Apostles—who is said to have offered sacrifice upon it—and of the other Pontiffs who up to that time had used it for the celebration of the mysteries, in the Lateran as the first church, and decreed that henceforth no one but the Roman Pontiff should celebrate Mass upon it.
That same church, shattered and overturned by fires, ravagings, and earthquakes, and restored by the assiduous care of the Supreme Pontiffs, and then rebuilt with new construction, was solemnly consecrated by Pope Benedict XIII, of the Order of Preachers, on the twenty-eighth day of April of the year seventeen hundred and twenty-six, who appointed the celebration of its anniversary to be observed on this day. And as for what Pius IX had judged should be completed, Pope Leo XIII had the great nave, crumbling with age, extended and enlarged by a great reconstruction; had the old mosaic, already in many parts previously restored, restored to its ancient model and transferred to the new apse, adorned with magnificent workmanship and elegance; had the transept hall, with its coffered ceiling and floor renewed, polished; the sacristy, the canons' residence, and the permanent portico to the Constantinian Baptistery were added, in the year eighteen hundred and eighty-four.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ Rising in the morning, Jacob set up a stone as a pillar, pouring oil upon it; he made a vow to the Lord:
Truly this place is holy, and I did not know it.

Psalm 98
98:1 The Lord has reigned: let the peoples be angry. * He sits upon the cherubim: let the earth be moved.
98:2 The Lord is great in Zion, * and he is high above all peoples.
98:3 May they confess to your great name, for it is terrible and holy. * And the honor of the king loves judgment.
98:4 You have prepared guidance. * You have accomplished judgment and justice in Jacob.
98:5 Exalt the Lord our God, and adore the footstool of his feet, * for it is holy.
98:6 Moses and Aaron are among his priests, * and Samuel is among those who call upon his name.
98:6 They called upon the Lord, and he heeded them. * He spoke to them in the pillar of the cloud.
98:7 They kept his testimonies * and the precept that he gave them.
98:8 You heeded them, O Lord our God. * You were a forgiving God to them, though taking vengeance on all their inventions.
98:9 Exalt the Lord our God, and adore on his holy mountain. * For the Lord our God is holy.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. Blessed is the glory of the Lord from his holy place, alleluia.
℣ This is the house of the Lord, firmly built.
℟ It is well founded upon solid rock.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:
℣ And lead us not into temptation:
℟ But deliver us from evil.
May the almighty and merciful Lord absolve us from the bonds of our sins.
℟ Amen.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the evangelical reading be our salvation and protection.
℟ Amen.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam
Luc 19:1-10
In illo témpore: Ingréssus Iesus perambulábat Iéricho. Et ecce vir nómine Zachǽus: et hic princeps erat publicanórum, et ipse dives. Et réliqua.
Homilía sancti Ambrósii Epíscopi
Lib. 8 in Luc., prope finem
Zachǽus, statúra pusíllus, hoc est, nulla nobilitátis ingénitæ dignitáte sublímis, exíguus méritis sicut pópulus natiónum, audíto Dómini Salvatóris advéntu, quem sui non recéperant, vidére cupiébat. Sed nemo fácile Iesum videt; nemo potest Iesum vidére constitútus in terra. Et, quia non prophétas, non legem habébat, tamquam formæ grátiam naturális, ascéndit in sycómorum, vanitátem scílicet Iudæórum vestígio suo próterens, erráta quoque córrigens superióris ætátis. Et ídeo Iesum in interióris domus recépit hospítio.
℣ Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟ Deo grátias.
℟ Domus mea, domus oratiónis vocábitur, dicit Dóminus: in ea omnis qui petit, áccipit; et qui quærit, ínvenit;
Et pulsánti aperiétur.
℣ Pétite, et accipiétis; quǽrite, et inveniétis.
℟ Et pulsánti aperiétur.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
℟ Amen.
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
Luc 19:1-10
At that time: Jesus entered and walked through Jericho. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, and he was the leader of the tax collectors, and he was wealthy. And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Ambrose the Bishop
Lib. 8 in Luc., prope finem
Zacchaeus, small in stature — that is, exalted by no dignity of inborn nobility, lowly in merit as the people of the nations — upon hearing of the coming of the Lord Savior, whom his own had not received, desired to see him. But no one easily sees Jesus; no one can see Jesus while standing on the earth. And because he had neither prophets nor the law, as it were the natural grace of form, he climbed a sycamore tree, treading underfoot with his step the vanity of the Jews, and also correcting the errors of his earlier life. And therefore Jesus received him as a guest in the inner chamber of his house.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ My house shall be called a house of prayer, says the Lord: in it everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds;
And to him who knocks it shall be opened.
℣ Ask, and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find.
℟ And to him who knocks it shall be opened.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the divine assistance remain always with us.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 8
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
℟ Amen.
Reading 8
And rightly did he climb the tree, that the good tree might bring forth good fruit, and that he, cut off from the wild olive by nature, and contrary to nature grafted into the good olive, might be able to bear the fruit of the law. For the root is holy, even if the branches are unprofitable. The people of the Gentiles, by the faith of the Resurrection, transcend their unfruitful glory, as if by a certain elevation of the body. Zacchaeus, therefore, is in the sycamore; the blind man is on the road: the Lord is on the point of showing mercy to one, and honours the other with the distinction of his lodging; he questions one in order to heal him, and invites himself, uninvited, to the other. For he knew that the reward of his hospitality would be abundant. Yet, though Zacchaeus had not yet heard the voice of the one inviting him, he had already seen his kindly affection.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ All your walls are of precious stones,
And the towers of Jerusalem shall be built with gems.
℣ The gates of Jerusalem shall be built with sapphire and emerald, and with precious stone all the circuit of its wall.
℟ And the towers of Jerusalem shall be built with gems.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ And the towers of Jerusalem shall be built with gems.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 9
Reading 9
But, lest we seem to have quickly left behind and passed by that blind man, as though disdainful of the poor, and hastened to the rich man, let us wait for him, because the Lord also waited; let us question him, because Christ also questioned. Let us question, because we do not know: he questioned, because he knew. Let us question, that we may learn from one where this man was healed: he questioned, that from one we might learn whence we may merit to see the Lord. For he questioned, that we might believe that no one, unless confessing, can be saved.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.

You are seated at the right hand of God * in the glory of the Father.
We believe you are the Judge * who is to come.

Number them * among your Saints in eternal glory.
Save your people, Lord, * and bless your inheritance.
Shepherd them * and raise them to eternal life.
Day by day * we bless you,

Be gracious, Lord, on this day, * and keep us from all sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, * have mercy.
May your mercy be upon us, Lord, * as we place our trust in you.
In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: * let me never be put to shame.
