Hymnus
Placáre, Christe, sérvulis,
Quibus Patris cleméntiam
Tuæ ad tribúnal grátiæ
Patróna Virgo póstulat.
Et vos beáta, per novem
Distíncta gyros ágmina,
Antíqua cum præséntibus,
Futúra damna péllite.
Apóstoli cum Vátibus,
Apud sevérum Iúdicem,
Veris reórum flétibus
Expóscite indulgéntiam.
Vos, purpuráti mártyres,
Vos candidáti prǽmio
Confessiónis, éxsules
Vocáte nos in pátriam.
Choréa casta vírginum,
Et quos erémus íncolas
Transmísit astris, cǽlitum
Locáte nos in sédibus.
Auférte gentem pérfidam
Credéntium de fínibus,
Ut unus omnes únicum
Ovíle nos Pastor regat.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Natóque Patris único,
Sancto simul Paráclito,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
O Christ, thy guilty people spare!
Lo, kneeling at thy gracious throne,
thy Virgin-Mother pours her prayer,
Imploring pardon for her own.
Ye angels, happy evermore!
Who in your circles nine ascend,
As ye have guarded us before,
So still from harm our steps defend.
Ye prophets and Apostles high!
Behold our penitential tears;
And plead for us when death is nigh,
our all-searching judge appears.
Ye martyrs all! a purple band,
And confessors, a white-robed train;
Oh, call us to our native land,
From this our exile, back again.
And ye, O choirs of virgins chaste!
Receive us to your seats on high;
With hermits whom the desert waste
Sent up of old into the sky.
Drive from the flock, O Spirit blest!
The false and faithless race away;
That all within one fold may rest,
Secure beneath one shepherd's sway.
To God the Father glory be,
And to his sole-begotten Son;
And glory, Holy Ghost, to thee,
While everlasting ages run.
Amen.

Ant.
Amen.
Ant.
Ant. The Lord knows * the way of the just, who meditate on his law day and night.
Psalm 1
1:1 Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, † and has not remained in the way of sinners, * and has not sat in the chair of pestilence.
1:2 But his will is with the law of the Lord, * and he will meditate on his law, day and night.
1:3a And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, * which will provide its fruit in its time,
1:3b and its leaf will not fall away, * and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper.
1:4 Not so the impious, not so. * For they are like the dust that the wind casts along the face of the earth.
1:5 Therefore, the impious will not prevail again in judgment, * nor sinners in the council of the just.
1:6 For the Lord knows the way of the just. * And the path of the impious will pass away.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. The Lord has made * his Saints wonderful, and has heard them when they cried to him.
Psalm 4
4:2a When I called upon him, the God of my justice heeded me. * In tribulation, you have enlarged me.
4:2b Have mercy on me, * and heed my prayer.
4:3 Sons of men, how long will you be dull in heart, * so that whatever you love is in vain, and whatever you seek is false?
4:4 And know this: the Lord has made wondrous his holy one. * The Lord will heed me when I cry out to him.
4:5 Be angry, and do not be willing to sin. ‡ The things that you say in your hearts: * be sorry for them on your beds.
4:6 Offer the sacrifice of justice, † and hope in the Lord. * Many say, “Who reveals to us what is good?”
4:7 The light of your countenance, Lord, has been sealed upon us. * You have given joy to my heart.
4:8 By the fruit of their grain, wine, and oil, * they have been multiplied.
4:9 In peace itself, * I will sleep and I will rest.
4:10 For you, O Lord, * have established me singularly in hope.

Psalm 8
8:2a O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!
8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants, you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.
8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.
8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him, * or the son of man, that you visit him?
8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; † you have crowned him with glory and honor, * (7) and you have set him over the works of your hands.
8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition: the beasts of the field,

From the Book of Revelation of the blessed Apostle John
Apo 4:2-8
2 And behold, a throne had been placed in heaven, and there was One sitting upon the throne.
3 And the One who was sitting there was similar in appearance to a stone of jasper and sardius. And there was an iridescence surrounding the throne, in aspect similar to an emerald.
4 And surrounding the throne were twenty-four smaller thrones. And upon the thrones, twenty-four elders were sitting, clothed entirely in white vestments, and on their heads were gold crowns.
5 And from the throne, lightnings and voices and thunders went forth. And there were seven burning lamps before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.
6 And in view of the throne, there was something that seemed like a sea of glass, similar to crystal. And in the middle of the throne, and all around the throne, there were four living creatures, full of eyes in front and in back.
7 And the first living creature resembled a lion, and the second living creature resembled a calf, and the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature resembled a flying eagle.
8 And each of the four living creatures had upon them six wings, and all around and within they are full of eyes. And they took no rest, day or night, from saying: 'Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.'
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ I saw the Lord seated upon a high and exalted throne, and the whole earth was filled with his majesty: *
And the things beneath him filled the temple.
℣ Seraphim stood above it: six wings to the one, and six wings to the other.
℟ And the things beneath him filled the temple.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.
℟ Amen.

Apo 5:1-8
1 And in the right hand of the One sitting upon the throne, I saw a book, written inside and out, sealed with seven seals.
2 And I saw a strong Angel, proclaiming with a great voice: Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?
3 And no one was able, neither in heaven, nor on earth, nor under the earth, to open the book, nor to gaze upon it.
4 And I wept greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book, nor to see it.
5 And one of the elders said to me: Weep not. Behold, the lion from the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed to open the book and to break its seven seals.
6 And I saw, and behold, in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb was standing, as if it were slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God, sent forth to all the earth.
7 And he approached and received the book from the right hand of the One sitting upon the throne.
8 And when he had opened the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having stringed instruments, as well as golden bowls full of fragrances, which are the prayers of the saints.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ Blessed are you, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, who believed the Lord: all things spoken to you have been fulfilled in you: behold, you have been exalted above the choirs of Angels:
Intercede for us to the Lord our God.
℣ Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
℟ Intercede for us to the Lord our God.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

10 et fecísti nos Deo nostro regnum, et sacerdótes: et regnábimus super terram.

Apo 5:9-14
9 And they were singing a new canticle, saying: O Lord, you are worthy to receive the book and to open its seals, because you were slain and have redeemed us for God, by your blood, from every tribe and language and people and nation:
10 and you have made us into a kingdom and into priests for our God, and we shall reign over the earth.
11 And I saw, and I heard the voice of many Angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders, and their number was thousands of thousands,
12 saying with a great voice: The Lamb who was slain is worthy to receive power, and divinity, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.
13 And every creature that is in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and all that is within the sea: I heard them all saying: To the One sitting upon the throne and to the Lamb be blessing, and honor, and glory, and authority, forever and ever.
14 And the four living creatures were saying, Amen. And the twenty-four elders fell down on their faces, and they adored the One who lives forever and ever.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ In the sight of the Angels I will sing praise to you:
And I will worship toward your holy temple, and I will give praise to your name, O Lord.

A Sermon of Saint Bede the Venerable, Priest
Sermo 18 de Sanctis
Today, most beloved, we celebrate the feast of all the Saints under the one joy of a single solemnity: of whose fellowship heaven exults, by whose patronage the earth rejoices, by whose triumphs the holy Church is crowned; whose confession is as much more glorious in honor as it was stronger in suffering: because, as the struggle grew, so too grew the glory of the combatants, and the triumph of martyrdom is adorned by a manifold variety of sufferings; and through the more grievous torments the rewards were also the more grievous: while the Catholic mother Church, spread far and wide throughout the whole world, was drawn in her very head, Christ Jesus, not to fear reproaches, crosses, and death; strengthened more and more, not by resisting but by enduring, she breathed into all whom the prison of punishment enclosed in its glorious company an equal and like fervor of virtue for waging the contest and the glory of triumph.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ The forerunner of the Lord has come, of whom he himself testifies:
No one among those born of women is greater than John the Baptist.
℣ For he is a prophet, and more than a prophet, of whom the Savior says.
℟ No one among those born of women is greater than John the Baptist.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 5
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
℟ Amen.
Reading 5
O truly blessed mother Church, whom the honor of divine condescension so illumines, whom the glorious blood of victorious Martyrs adorns, whom the white robe of inviolate confession clothes with virginity! Among her flowers neither the rose of martyrs nor the lily of virgins is lacking. Strive therefore, beloved brethren, that each one of you, in the same spirit in which you have enlisted in the heavenly militia, may worthily fill his rank.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ These are they who, living in the flesh, planted the Church with their blood:
They drank the chalice of the Lord, and were made friends of God.
℣ Into all the earth their sound has gone forth, and to the ends of the world their words.
℟ They drank the chalice of the Lord, and were made friends of God.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 6
Reading 6
For the ineffable and immeasurable goodness of God also provided this: that he would not extend nor make long or eternal the time of labors and of struggle, but brief and, so to speak, momentary — so that in this brief and scanty life there would be contests and labors, but in that life which is eternal, crowns and rewards of merits; so that the labors would soon be ended, while the rewards of merits would endure without end; so that after the darkness of this world they would behold the most pure light, and receive a blessedness greater than all the bitterness of their sufferings — as the Apostle himself testifies, saying: "The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that will be revealed in us."
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ My holy ones, who while set in the flesh endured the struggle:
I myself will render you the reward of your labor.
℣ Come, blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom.
℟ I myself will render you the reward of your labor.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ I myself will render you the reward of your labor.

33:15 Turn away from evil, and do good. * Inquire about peace, and pursue it.
33:16 The eyes of the Lord are on the just, * and his ears are with their prayers.

96:1 The Lord has reigned, let the earth exult. * Let the many islands rejoice.
96:2 Clouds and mist are all around him. * Justice and judgment are corrections from his throne.
96:3 A fire will precede him, * and it will enflame his enemies all around.
96:4 His lightnings have enlightened the whole world. * The earth saw, and it was shaken.
96:5 The mountains flowed like wax before the face of the Lord, * before the face of the Lord of all the earth.
96:6 The heavens announced his justice, * and all peoples saw his glory.
96:7 May all those who adore graven images be confounded, * along with those who glory in their false images.
96:7 All you his Angels: Adore him. * Zion heard, and was glad.

96:9 For you are the Most High Lord over all the earth. * You are greatly exalted above all gods.
96:10 You who love the Lord: hate evil. * The Lord watches over the souls of his holy ones. He will free them from the hand of the sinner.
96:11 The light has risen for the just, * and joy for the upright of heart.
96:12 Rejoice in the Lord, you just ones, * and confess to the memory of his sanctuary.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum
Matt 5:1-12
Et vos símiles homínibus exspectántibus dóminum suum, quando revertátur a núptiis.
℣ Vigiláte ergo, quia nescítis qua hora Dóminus vester ventúrus sit.
℟ Et vos símiles homínibus exspectántibus dóminum suum, quando revertátur a núptiis.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟ Et vos símiles homínibus exspectántibus dóminum suum, quando revertátur a núptiis.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio.
℟ Amen.
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 5:1-12
At that time: Seeing the crowds, Jesus ascended the mountain, and when he had sat down, his disciples drew near to him. And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Augustine, Bishop
Lib. 1 de Sermone Domini in monte, sub initium
If it is asked what the mountain signifies, it is well understood to signify the greater precepts of justice, because those given to the Jews were lesser. Yet one God, through his holy prophets and servants, according to the most orderly distribution of times, gave lesser precepts to the people who still needed to be bound by fear; and through his Son, greater precepts to the people who were now to be set free by charity. But when lesser things are given to lesser ones, and greater things to greater ones, they are given by him who alone knows how to offer to the human race the fitting remedy for their times.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ Let your loins be girded, and your lamps burning in your hands:
And you, like men awaiting their master, when he shall return from the wedding feast.
℣ Watch therefore, for you do not know at what hour your Lord is to come.
℟ And you, like men awaiting their master, when he shall return from the wedding feast.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ And you, like men awaiting their master, when he shall return from the wedding feast.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May he whose feast we celebrate intercede for us to the Lord.
℟ Amen.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
℟ Amen.
Reading 8
Nor is it strange that greater commandments are given for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven, and lesser ones were given for the sake of the earthly kingdom, by the same one God who made heaven and earth. Concerning this justice, which is greater, it is said by the prophet: Your justice is like the mountains of God — and this is well signified by the fact that such great matters are taught on a mountain by the one Master, the only one suited to teach such things. He sits while he teaches, which pertains to the dignity of the office of a teacher. And his disciples draw near to him, that those who would draw close to his commandments in spirit might also be bodily closer to hearing his words. And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying. This circumlocution, in which it is written, And opening his mouth, perhaps commends by its deliberateness that the discourse is to be somewhat long. Unless perhaps it is not without significance that it is now said that he opened his mouth, whereas in the old law he was accustomed to open the mouths of the prophets.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℟ At midnight a cry was made:
Behold, the bridegroom comes; go forth to meet him.
℣ Wise virgins, trim your lamps.
℟ Behold, the bridegroom comes; go forth to meet him.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Behold, the bridegroom comes; go forth to meet him.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benediction. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.
℟ Amen.
Lectio 9
Quid ergo dicit?
Reading 9
What then does he say? Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We read it written concerning the appetite for temporal things: All is vanity and presumption of spirit. Now presumption of spirit signifies boldness and pride. In common speech, moreover, the proud are said to have a great spirit, and rightly so, since spirit is also called wind. Hence it is written: Fire, hail, snow, ice, the spirit of storms. Who does not know that the proud are said to be puffed up, as though swollen by wind? Hence also that saying of the Apostle: Knowledge puffs up, but charity builds up. Wherefore those who are poor in spirit are rightly understood here as the humble and those who fear God, that is, those who do not have a spirit that puffs them up.
℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟ Thanks be to God.

In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: * let me never be put to shame.
