Hymnus

Ætérna Imago Altíssimi,
Lumen, Deus, de Lúmine,
Tibi, Redémptor glória,
Honor, potéstas régia.

Tu solus ante sǽcula
Spes atque centrum témporum,
Cui iure sceptrum géntium
Pater suprémum crédidit.

Tu flos pudícæ Vírginis,
Nostræ caput propáginis,
Lapis cadúcus vértice
Ac mole terras óccupans.

Diro tyránno súbdita,
Damnáta stirps mortálium,
Per te refrégit víncula
Sibíque cælum víndicat.

Doctor, Sacérdos, Légifer
Præfers notátum sánguine
In veste « Princeps príncipum
Regúmque Rex Altíssimus ».

Tibi voléntes súbdimur,
Qui iure cunctis ímperas:
Hæc cívium beátitas
Tuis subésse légibus.
Iesu, tibi sit glória,
Qui sceptra mundi témperas,
Cum Patre, et almo Spíritu,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.

O thou eternal Image bright
Of God most high, thou Light of Light,
To thee, Redeemer, glory be,
And might and kingly majesty.

Sole hope of all created things,
Thou art the Lord and King of kings,
Whom God, long ere creation's morn,
Had crowned to rule earth yet unborn.

Fair flower from the Virgin's breast,
Our race's Head for ever blest,
The stone that Daniel saw on high,
Which falling, o'er the world doth lie.

The race of men, condemned to lie
Beneath the direful tyrant's yoke,
By thee at length the shackles broke
And claimed the fatherland on high.

Priest, Teacher, Giver of the law,
Thy Name the rapt Apostle saw
Writ on thy vesture and thy thigh:
The King Of Kings, The Lord Most High.

Fain would we own thy blessed sway,
Whose rule all creatures must obey;
For happy is that state and throne
Whose subjects seek thy will alone.
All glory be, Jesu, to thee,
Thy scepter over all that be;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To Father and to Paraclete.
Amen.

Psalmus 2

2:3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et proiciámus a nobis iugum ipsórum.
2:4 Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
2:7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
2:8 Póstula a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
2:9 Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.

Psalm 2

2:1 Why have the Gentiles been seething, * and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
2:2 The kings of the earth have stood up, and the leaders have joined together as one, * against the Lord and against his Christ:
2:3 “Let us shatter their chains * and cast their yoke away from us.”
2:4 He who dwells in heaven will ridicule them, * and the Lord will mock them.
2:5 Then will he speak to them in his anger * and trouble them with his fury.
2:6 Yet I have been appointed king by him over Zion, his holy mountain, * preaching his precepts.
2:7 The Lord has said to me: * You are my son, this day have I begotten you.
2:8 Ask of me and I will give to you: the Gentiles for your inheritance, * and the ends of the earth for your possession.
2:9 You will rule them with an iron rod, * and you will shatter them like a potter’s vessel.
2:10 And now, O kings, understand. * Receive instruction, you who judge the earth.
2:11 Serve the Lord in fear, * and exult in him with trembling.
2:12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord might become angry, * and you would perish from the way of the just.
2:13 Though his wrath can flare up in a short time, * blessed are all those who trust in him.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants, you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.
8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.
8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him, * or the son of man, that you visit him?
8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; † you have crowned him with glory and honor, * (7) and you have set him over the works of your hands.
8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition: the beasts of the field,
8:9 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, * which pass through the paths of the sea.
8:10 O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!

23:7 Attóllite portas, príncipes, vestras, et elevámini, portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
23:8 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus fortis et potens: Dóminus potens in prǽlio.
23:9 Attóllite portas, príncipes, vestras, et elevámini, portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
23:10 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus virtútum ipse est Rex glóriæ.

23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.
23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?
23:4 The innocent of hands and the clean of heart, * who has not received his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.
23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.

From the Letter of the blessed Apostle Paul to the Colossians

Col 1:3-8

3 We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying for you always,
4 for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love that you have toward all the saints,
5 because of the hope that has been stored up for you in heaven, which you have heard through the Word of Truth in the Gospel.
6 This has reached you, just as it is present in the whole world, where it grows and bears fruit, as it has also done in you, since the day when you first heard and knew the grace of God in truth,
7 just as you learned it from Epaphras, our most beloved fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ Jesus.
8 And he has also manifested to us your love in the Spirit.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ He shall sit upon the throne of David and over his kingdom for ever:

And his name shall be called God, the Mighty One, Prince of Peace.

Col 1:9-17

9 Then, too, from the day when we first heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and requesting that you be filled with the knowledge of his will, with all wisdom and spiritual understanding,
10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of God, being pleasing in all things, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God,
11 being strengthened in every virtue, in accord with the power of his glory, with all patience and longsuffering, with joy,
12 giving thanks to God the Father, who has made us worthy to have a share in the portion of the saints, in the light.
13 For he has rescued us from the power of darkness, and he has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of his love,
14 in whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of every creature.
16 For in him was created everything in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominations, or principalities, or powers. All things were created through him and in him.
17 And he is before all, and in him all things continue.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ I beheld in a vision of the night, and behold, upon the clouds of heaven there came one like the Son of Man: and dominion and honor were given to him:

Col 1:18-23

18 Et ipse est caput córporis Ecclésiæ, qui est princípium, primogénitus ex mórtuis, ut sit in ómnibus ipse primátum tenens;
19 quia in ipso complácuit omnem plenitúdinem inhabitáre,
21 Et vos, cum essétis aliquándo alienáti, et inimíci sensu in opéribus malis;
22 nunc autem reconciliávit in córpore carnis eius per mortem, exhibére vos sanctos, et immaculátos, et irreprehensíbiles coram ipso;

Reading 3

Col 1:18-23

18 And he is the head of his body, the Church. He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, so that in all things he may hold primacy;
19 for the Father is well-pleased that all fullness reside in him,
20 and that, through him, all things be reconciled to himself, making peace through the blood of his cross, for the things that are on earth, as well as the things that are in heaven.
21 And you, though you had been, in times past, understood to be foreigners and enemies, with works of evil;
22 yet now he has reconciled you, by his body of flesh, through death, so as to offer you, holy and immaculate and blameless, before him.
23 So then, continue in the faith: well-founded and steadfast and immovable, by the hope of the Gospel that you have heard, which has been preached throughout all creation under heaven, the Gospel of which I, Paul, have become a minister.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ And you, Bethlehem Ephrata, a little one among the thousands of Judah: from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel:

And this one shall be our Peace.

℣ His going forth is from the beginning, from the days of eternity: he shall stand firm and feed on the strength of the Lord.

℟ And this one shall be our Peace.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ And this one shall be our Peace.

28:6 And it will break them into pieces, like a calf of Lebanon, * and in the same way as the beloved son of the single-horned beast.
28:7 The voice of the Lord cuts through the flame of fire. * The voice of the Lord shakes the desert. And the Lord will quake the desert of Kadesh.
28:9 The voice of the Lord is preparing the stags, and he will reveal the dense woods. * And in his temple, all will speak his glory.

44:7 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. * The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of true aim.
44:8 You have loved justice and hated iniquity. * Because of this, God, your God, has anointed you, before your co-heirs, with the oil of gladness.
44:9 Myrrh and balsam and cinnamon perfume your garments, from the houses of ivory. * From these, they have delighted you: (10a) the daughters of kings in your honor.
44:10b The queen assisted at your right hand, in clothing of gold, * encircled with diversity.
44:11 Listen, daughter, and see, and incline your ear. * And forget your people and your father’s house.

From the Encyclical Letters of Pope Pius XI

Litt. Encycl. «Quas primas» diei 11 Decembris 1925

Since the Holy Year has not been lacking in opportunity for illustrating the Kingdom of Christ, we seem to be doing something especially consonant with our Apostolic office if, yielding to the petitions of very many Cardinals, Bishops, and faithful, brought to us either severally or in common, we close this same Year by introducing into the liturgy of the Church a special feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. It has long been customary to call Christ a King in the transferred sense of the word, on account of the supreme degree of excellence by which he towers above and excels all created things. And so it comes about that he is said to reign «in the minds of men» — not so much on account of the keenness of his mind and the vastness of his knowledge, as because he himself is the Truth, and it is necessary that mortals draw from him and obediently receive the truth; to reign also «in the wills of men», because not only does the full integrity and obedience of the human will correspond perfectly to the sanctity of his divine will, but he also subjects our free will to himself by his impulse and inspiration, so that we may be enkindled to all that is most noble. Finally, Christ is acknowledged as «King of hearts» on account of his «charity which surpasses knowledge» and his gentleness and kindness which draw souls to him: for it has never befallen anyone, nor will it befall anyone in the future, to be loved so greatly by the whole of mankind as Christ Jesus has been and will be loved. But, to enter more closely into the matter, no one fails to see that the name and power of king ought in the proper sense of the word to be ascribed to Christ as man; for it cannot be said that he received «power, honor, and kingdom» from the Father except insofar as he is man; since the Word of God, who has the same substance as the Father, cannot but have all things in common with the Father, and therefore supreme and most absolute dominion over all created things.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout for joy, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your King shall come to you, just and a Savior:

And he shall speak peace to the nations.

℣ His dominion shall be from sea to sea: and from the rivers to the ends of the earth.

℟ And he shall speak peace to the nations.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

℟ Amen.

Now, as to the foundation upon which this dignity and power of our Lord rests, Cyril of Alexandria aptly observes: "He holds dominion, to say it in a word, over all creatures, not by force extorted, nor brought in from elsewhere, but by his own essence and nature"; that is, his sovereignty is based upon that wonderful union which is called hypostatic. From this it follows not only that Christ is to be adored by Angels and men as God, but also that the Angels and men are to obey and be subject to his rule as Man: namely, that by the very name of the hypostatic union alone Christ obtains power over all creatures. Now, to declare briefly the force and nature of this sovereignty, it scarcely needs to be said that it is contained in a threefold power, without which sovereignty can hardly be understood. The testimonies drawn and adduced from sacred Scripture concerning the universal sovereignty of our Redeemer more than sufficiently signify this, and it is to be believed with Catholic faith that Christ Jesus was given to human beings as their Redeemer in whom they are to trust, and at the same time as their Lawgiver whom they are to obey. The Gospels, moreover, do not so much narrate that he established laws as introduce him in the act of establishing them: those who keep these precepts are said by the divine Master, in various words at various times, to be those who will prove their love for him and who will abide in his love. The judicial power attributed to himself by the Father, Jesus himself declares to the Jews, who accused him of violating the Sabbath rest through the wondrous healing of a disabled man: "For neither does the Father judge anyone, but all judgment he has given to the Son." In this is also comprehended (since the matter cannot be separated from judgment) that he bestows by his own right rewards and punishments upon men still living. Moreover, that power which they call executive is to be attributed to Christ, since it is necessary for all to obey his command, and this indeed is made known to the obstinate through the infliction of punishments which no one can escape.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ He must reign, for God has subjected all things under his feet:

That God may be all in all.

℣ When all things shall have been subjected to him, then the Son himself shall also be subject to the Father.

℟ That God may be all in all.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

℟ Amen.

But that such a kingdom is in a special way spiritual and pertains to spiritual things, not only do the words we have cited above from the Scriptures show most plainly, but Christ the Lord also confirms it by his manner of acting. For not on one occasion only, when the Jews, and indeed even the Apostles themselves, erred in thinking that the Messiah would vindicate the people and restore the kingdom of Israel, did he take away and uproot that vain opinion and hope; when he was about to be proclaimed king by the surrounding multitude of admirers, he avoided and declined both the name and the honor by fleeing and hiding; before the Roman governor he declared that his kingdom was from another world; and

88:5 And I will build up your throne, * from generation to generation.
88:6 The heavens will confess your miracles, Lord, * and also your truth, in the Church of the saints.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem

Ioannes 18:33-37

In illo témpore: Dixit Pilátus ad Iesum: Tu es Rex Iudæórum? Respóndit Iesus: A temetípso hoc dicis, an álii dixérunt tibi de me? Et réliqua.

Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi

Tract. 51 in Ioann. 12-13; Tract 117 in Ioann. 19-21

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

℟ Amen.

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to John

Ioannes 18:33-37

At that time: Pilate said to Jesus: Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered: Are you saying this of yourself, or have others spoken to you about me? And so forth.

A Homily of Saint Augustine, Bishop

Tract. 51 in Ioann. 12-13; Tract 117 in Ioann. 19-21

What great thing was it for the King of the ages to become King of men? For Christ is not King of Israel in order to exact tribute or to arm an army with the sword and visibly vanquish enemies; but King of Israel in this: that he governs minds, that he counsels for eternity, that he leads those who believe, hope, and love into the Kingdom of Heaven. The Son of God, therefore, equal to the Father, the Word through whom all things were made, wished to be King of Israel — this is condescension, not promotion; it is a sign of mercy, not an increase of power. For he who was called on earth King of the Jews is in heaven the Lord of Angels. But is Christ King of the Jews alone, or also of the nations? Indeed, also of the nations. For when it was said in prophecy: But I have been established as King by him upon Zion his holy mountain, proclaiming the commandment of the Lord — lest anyone, on account of Mount Zion, should say he had been established king for the Jews alone — he immediately added: The Lord said to me, You are my Son; today I have begotten you; ask of me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as your possession.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ The kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ:

And he shall reign for ever and ever.

℣ All the families of the nations shall worship in his sight; for the kingdom belongs to the Lord.

℟ And he shall reign for ever and ever.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

℟ Amen.

Tract. 115 in Ioannem 18-36

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

℟ Amen.

Tract. 115 in Ioannem 18-36

Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not hence. This is what the good Master wished us to know; but first it was necessary to set before us the vain opinion of men — whether of the Gentiles or of the Jews from whom Pilate had heard it — concerning his kingdom: as though he was to be condemned to death because he had sought an unlawful kingship, or because kings tend to envy those who are about to reign, and evidently it was to be feared that his kingdom might be hostile either to the Romans or to the Jews.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ The ten horns which you saw are ten kings. They will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them:

For he is Lord of lords and King of kings.

℣ The Lord our God almighty has reigned: let us rejoice and exult, and give glory to him.

℟ For he is Lord of lords and King of kings.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ For he is Lord of lords and King of kings.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 9

Reading 9

Now the Lord could have answered what he says — My kingdom is not of this world — to the president's first question, when he had said to him: Are you the King of the Jews? But by questioning him in turn, whether he said this of himself or had heard it from others, and by Pilate's reply, he wished to show that this had been laid against him before that judge as a crime by the Jews: making known to us the thoughts of men, which he himself knew, that they are vain; and replying to the Jews and the Gentiles after Pilate's response now more fittingly and aptly: My kingdom is not of this world.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.
