Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

Psalmi

Ant.

Psalmus 21(2-12) [1]

21:2 Deus, Deus meus, réspice in me: quare me dereliquísti? * longe a salúte mea verba delictórum meórum.

21:8 Omnes vidéntes me, derisérunt me: * locúti sunt lábiis, et movérunt caput.

21:9 Sperávit in Dómino, erípiat eum: * salvum fáciat eum, quóniam vult eum.

Amen.

Psalmus 21(13-23) [2]

21:13 Circumdedérunt me vítuli multi: * tauri pingues obsedérunt me.

21:14 Aperuérunt super me os suum, * sicut leo rápiens et rúgiens.

21:17 Quóniam circumdedérunt me canes multi: * concílium malignántium obsédit me.

21:17 Fodérunt manus meas et pedes meos: * dinumeravérunt ómnia ossa mea.

21:18 Ipsi vero consideravérunt et inspexérunt me: * divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea, et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.

21:20 Tu autem, Dómine, ne elongáveris auxílium tuum a me: * ad defensiónem meam cónspice.

21:22 Salva me ex ore leónis: * et a córnibus unicórnium humilitátem meam.

21:23 Narrábo nomen tuum frátribus meis: * in médio ecclésiæ laudábo te.

℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Psalmus 21(24-32) [3]

21:26 Apud te laus mea in ecclésia magna: * vota mea reddam in conspéctu timéntium eum.

21:30 Manducavérunt et adoravérunt omnes pingues terræ: * in conspéctu ejus cadent omnes qui descéndunt in terram.

21:31 Et ánima mea illi vivet: * et semen meum sérviet ipsi.

21:32 Annuntiábitur Dómino generátio ventúra: * et annuntiábunt cæli justítiam ejus pópulo qui nascétur, quem fecit Dóminus.

℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Ant.

Ant. Do not depart from me, * O Lord: for tribulation is near: for there is none to help.

Psalm 21(2-12) [1]

21:2 O God, my God, look upon me. Why have you forsaken me? * Far from my salvation are the words of my offenses.

21:3 My God, I will cry out by day, and you will not heed, * and by night, and it will not be foolishness for me.

21:4 But you dwell in holiness, * O Praise of Israel.

21:5 In you, our fathers have hoped. * They hoped, and you freed them.

21:6 They cried out to you, and they were saved. * In you, they hoped and were not confounded.

21:7 But I am a worm and not a man: * a disgrace among men, and an outcast of the people.

21:8 All those who saw me have derided me. * They have spoken with the lips and shook the head.

21:9 He has hoped in the Lord, let him rescue him. * Let him save him because he chooses him.

21:10 For you are the one who has drawn me out of the womb, * my hope from the breasts of my mother. I have been thrown upon you from the womb;

21:11 from the womb of my mother, you are my God. * Do not depart from me.

21:12 For tribulation is near, * since there is no one who may help me.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 21(13-23) [2]

21:13 Many calves have surrounded me; * fat bulls have besieged me.

21:14 They have opened their mouths over me, * just like a lion seizing and roaring.

21:15 And so, I have been poured out like water, * and all my bones have been scattered.

21:15 My heart has become like wax, melting * in the midst of my chest.

21:16 My strength has dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue has adhered to my jaws. * And you have pulled me down, into the dust of death.

21:17 For many dogs have surrounded me. * The council of the malicious has besieged me.

21:17 They have pierced my hands and feet. * They have numbered all my bones.

21:18 And they have examined me and stared at me. * They divided my garments among them, and over my vestment, they cast lots.

21:20 But you, O Lord, do not take your help far from me; * be attentive to my defense.

21:21 O God, rescue my soul from the spear, * and my only one from the hand of the dog.

21:22 Save me from the mouth of the lion, * and my humility from the horns of the single-horned beast.

21:23 I will declare your name to my brothers. * In the midst of the Church, I will praise you.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 21(24-32) [3]

21:24 You who fear the Lord, praise him. * All the offspring of Jacob, glorify him.

21:25 May all the offspring of Israel fear him. * For he has neither spurned nor despised the pleas of the poor.

21:25 Neither has he turned his face away from me. * And when I cried out to him, he heeded me.

21:26 My praise is with you, within a great church. * I will pay my vows in the sight of those who fear him.

21:27 The poor will eat and be satisfied, and those who yearn for the Lord will praise him. * Their hearts will live forever and ever.

21:28 They will remember and be converted to the Lord, * all the ends of the earth.

21:28 And they will adore in his sight, * all the families of the Gentiles.

21:29 For the kingdom belongs to the Lord, * and he will have dominion over the Gentiles.

21:30 All the prosperous of the earth have eaten and adored. * In his sight, they will fall down, all those who descend to the ground.

21:31 And my soul will live for him, * and my offspring will serve him.

21:32 There will be announced for the Lord a future generation, * and the heavens will announce his justice to a people who will be born, whom the Lord has made.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. Do not depart from me, O Lord: for tribulation is near: for there is none to help.

The Fifteenth of August. The second day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

The Assumption of the most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

At Krakow in Poland, the heavenly birthday of Saint Hyacinth, of the Order of Preachers, Confessor, whom Clement VIII, Supreme Pontiff, enrolled in the number of the Saints. His feast is celebrated on the seventeenth of August.

Near Alba Regalis in Pannonia, likewise the heavenly birthday of Saint Stephen, King of the Hungarians and Confessor; who, adorned with divine virtues, was the first to convert the Hungarians to the faith of Christ, and was received into heaven by the Virgin Mother of God on the very day of her Assumption. His feast is especially commemorated on the second of September, on which day the most fortified citadel of Buda was vigorously recovered by the Christian army through the help of the holy King, by the appointment of Pope Innocent XI.

At Rome, on the Appian Way, Saint Tarsicius the Acolyte, whom the pagans found carrying the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and began to question about what he was carrying. But he, judging it unworthy to cast pearls before swine, was beaten by them with clubs and stones so long until he breathed his last; and when his body was turned over, the sacrilegious searchers found nothing of the Sacraments of Christ in the hands or on the garments of the slain man. The Christians, however, gathered the body of the Martyr and buried it with honor in the cemetery of Callixtus.

At Tagaste in Africa, Saint Alypius the Bishop, who was formerly a disciple of the blessed Augustine, then his companion in conversion, his colleague in the pastoral office, his strenuous fellow soldier in the struggles against heretics, and finally his companion in celestial glory.

At Soissons in Gaul, Saint Arnulphus, Bishop and Confessor.

At Rome, Saint Stanislaus Kostka, a Pole, novice of the Society of Jesus and Confessor; who, perfected in a short time through an angelic innocence of life, fulfilled many years, and was enrolled in the roll of the Saints by Benedict XIII, Supreme Pontiff.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
