Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,

Lowly of heart, our God we pray

That he from harm may keep us free

In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,

Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:

His favouring care our guardian be,

Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin

And folly find no place therein:

Scant need of food, excess denied,

Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,

And night in course shall follow on.

We, free from cares the world affords,

May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the holy Paraclete.

Amen.

93:13 Ut mítiges ei a diébus malis: * donec fodiátur peccatóri fóvea.

93:17 Nisi quia Dóminus adjúvit me: * paulo minus habitásset in inférno ánima mea.

93:18 Si dicébam: Motus est pes meus: * misericórdia tua, Dómine, adjuvábat me.

93:19 Secúndum multitúdinem dolórum meórum in corde meo: * consolatiónes tuæ lætificavérunt ánimam meam.

107:10 Juda rex meus: * Moab lebes spei meæ.

107:10 In Idumǽam exténdam calceaméntum meum: * mihi alienígenæ amíci facti sunt.

107:11 Quis dedúcet me in civitátem munítam? * quis dedúcet me usque in Idumǽam?

Amen.

Ant. Exaltáre, Dómine, qui júdicas terram: redde retributiónem supérbis.

Ant. Be exalted, O Lord, * you who judge the earth: render retribution to the proud.

Psalm 93(1-11) [1]

93:1 The Lord is the God of retribution. * The God of retribution acts in order to deliver.

93:2 Lift yourself up, for you judge the earth. * Repay the arrogant with retribution.

93:3 How long will sinners, O Lord, * how long will sinners glory?

93:4 How long will they utter and speak iniquity? * How long will all who work injustice speak out?

93:5 They have humiliated your people, O Lord, * and they have harassed your inheritance.

93:6 They have executed the widow and the new arrival, * and they have slaughtered the orphan.

93:7 And they have said, “The Lord will not see, * nor will the God of Jacob understand.”

93:8 Understand, you senseless ones among the people. * And be wise at last, you foolish ones.

93:9 He who formed the ear, will he not hear? * And he who forged the eye, does he not look closely?

93:10 He who chastises nations, * he who teaches man knowledge, will he not rebuke?

93:11 The Lord knows the thoughts of men: * that these are in vain.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 93(12-23) [2]

93:12 Blessed is the man whom you will instruct, O Lord. * And you will teach him from your law.

93:13 So may you soothe him from the evil days, * until a pit may be dug for sinners.

93:14 For the Lord will not drive away his people, * and he will not abandon his inheritance,

93:15 even until the time when justice is being converted into judgment, * and when those who are close to justice are all those who are upright of heart.

93:16 Who will rise up with me against the malignant? * Or who will stand with me against the workers of iniquity?

93:17 Except that the Lord assisted me, * my soul almost would have dwelt in Hell.

93:18 If ever I said, “My foot is slipping,” * then your mercy, O Lord, assisted me.

93:19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, * your consolations have given joy to my soul.

93:20 Does the seat of iniquity adhere to you, * you who contrive hardship within a commandment?

93:21 They will hunt down the soul of the just, * and they will condemn innocent blood.

93:22 And the Lord has been made into a refuge for me, * and my God into the assistance of my hope.

93:23 And he will repay them their iniquity, and he will destroy them in their malice. * The Lord our God will utterly destroy them.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 107 [3]

107:2 My heart is prepared, O God, my heart is prepared. * I will sing songs, and I will sing psalms in my glory.

107:3 Rise up, my glory. Rise up, Psalter and harp. * I will arise in early morning.

107:4 I will confess to you, O Lord, among the peoples. * And I will sing psalms to you among the nations.

107:5 For your mercy is great, beyond the heavens, * and your truth, even to the clouds.

107:6 Be exalted, O God, beyond the heavens, and your glory, beyond all the earth, * so that your beloved may be freed.

107:7 Save with your right hand, and heed me. * God has spoken in his holiness.

107:8 I will exult, and I will divide Shechem, * and I will divide by measure the steep valley of tabernacles.

107:9 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine, * and Ephraim is the supporter of my head.

107:10 Judah is my king. * Moab is the cooking pot of my hope.

107:10 I will extend my shoe in Idumea; * the foreigners have become my friends.

107:11 Who will lead me into the fortified city? * Who will lead me, even into Idumea?

107:12 Will not you, O God, who had rejected us? * And will not you, O God, go out with our armies?

107:13 Grant us help from tribulation, * for vain is the help of man.

107:14 In God, we will act virtuously, * and he will bring our enemies to nothing.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. Be exalted, O Lord, you who judge the earth: render retribution to the proud.

The Second of August. The eighteenth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

Saint Alphonsus Mary de Liguori, Founder of the Congregation called of the Most Holy Redeemer, Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti, Confessor and Doctor of the Church, who rested in the Lord on the day before this day.

At Rome, in the Cemetery of Callixtus, the heavenly birthday of Saint Stephen I, Pope and Martyr; who, during the persecution of Valerian, while he was celebrating the Sacred Sacrifice of the Mass, and, with soldiers arriving, was completing the mysteries he had begun, fearless and unmoved before the altar, was beheaded in his chair.

At Nicaea in Bithynia, the passion of Saint Theodota, with her three sons. Of these, the firstborn, by name Evodius, when he had fearlessly confessed Christ, was first ordered by Nicetius, the governor of consular rank in Bithynia, to be beaten with clubs; then the mother, together with all her sons, to be consumed by fire.

In Africa, Saint Rutilius the Martyr, who, having repeatedly escaped persecution by fleeing from place to place, and having at times even ransomed himself from danger with money, was suddenly arrested on one occasion, and, brought before the Governor, was tormented with very many tortures; at last, handed over to the flames, he was crowned with illustrious martyrdom.

At Padua, Saint Maximus, Bishop of that same city, who, renowned for miracles, rested with a blessed end.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
