Invitatorium

Ant. Christum Regem adorémus dominántem géntibus: * Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Ant. Christum Regem adorémus dominántem géntibus: * Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo, salutári nostro: præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei.

Ant. Christum Regem adorémus dominántem géntibus: * Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos, quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam: quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.

Ant.

Ant. Christum Regem adorémus dominántem géntibus: * Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Hódie, si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto: ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea.

Ant. Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi: Semper hi errant corde, ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas: quibus jurávi in ira mea: Si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Ant. Christum Regem adorémus dominántem géntibus: * Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Ant. Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Ant. Christum Regem adorémus dominántem géntibus: * Qui se manducántibus dat spíritus pinguédinem.

Ant. Let us adore Christ the King who rules over the nations: * Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

Ant. Let us adore Christ the King who rules over the nations: * Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

Come, let us exult in the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to God, our Savior. Let us anticipate his presence with confession, and let us sing joyfully to him with psalms.

Ant. Let us adore Christ the King who rules over the nations: * Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all gods. For the Lord will not drive away his people. For in his hand are all the limits of the earth, and he beholds the heights of the mountains.

Ant. Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

For the sea is his, and he made it, and his hands established the dry land. (kneel) Come, let us adore and fall prostrate before God, and let us weep before the Lord who made us. For he is the Lord our God, and we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Ant. Let us adore Christ the King who rules over the nations: * Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness, where your fathers tempted me; they tested and saw my works.

Ant. Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

For forty years, I was near to that generation, and I said: These have always strayed in heart. But they have not known my ways. To them I swore in my wrath: They shall not enter into my rest.

Ant. Let us adore Christ the King who rules over the nations: * Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. Who gives fatness of spirit to those who eat him.

Hymnus

Sacris solémniis juncta sint gáudia,

Et ex præcórdiis sonent præcónia;

Recédant vétera, nova sint ómnia,

Corda, voces, et ópera.

Noctis recólitur cœna novíssima,

Qua Christus créditur agnum et ázyma

Dedísse frátribus, juxta legítima

Priscis indúlta pátribus.

Post agnum týpicum, explétis épulis,

Corpus Domínicum datum discípulis,

Sic totum ómnibus, quod totum síngulis,

Ejus fatémur mánibus.

Dedit fragílibus córporis férculum,

Dedit et trístibus sánguinis póculum,

Dicens: Accípite quod trado vásculum;

Omnes ex eo bíbite.

Sic sacrifícium istud instítuit,

Cujus offícium commítti vóluit

Solis presbýteris, quibus sic cóngruit,

Ut sumant, et dent céteris.

Panis angélicus fit panis hóminum;

Dat panis cǽlicus figúris términum;

O res mirábilis: mandúcat Dóminum

Pauper, servus et húmilis.

Te, trina Déitas únaque, póscimus;

Sic nos tu vísita, sicut te cólimus:

Per tuas sémitas duc nos quo téndimus,

Ad lucem quam inhábitas.

Amen.

At this our solemn feast,

Let holy joys abound,

And from the inmost breast

Let songs of praise resound;

Let ancient rites depart,

And all be new around,

In ev'ry act and voice and heart.

Remember we that eve,

When, the last supper spread,

Christ, as we all believe,

The lamb, with leavenless bread,

Among his brethren shared,

And thus the law obeyed,

Of old unto their sires declared.

The typic lamb consumed,

The legal feast complete,

The Lord unto the twelve

His body gave to eat;

The whole to all, no less

The whole to each, did mete

With his own hands, as we confess.

He gave them, weak and frail,

His flesh, their food to be;

On them, downcast and sad,

His blood bestowèd he:

And thus to them he spake,

“Receive this cup from me,

And all of you of this partake.”

So he this sacrifice

To institute did will,

And charged his priests alone

That office to fulfil:

In them he did confide:

To whom pertaineth still

To take, and to the rest divide.

Thus angels' bread is made

The bread of man today:

The living bread from heaven

With figures doth away:

O wondrous gift indeed!

The poor and lowly may

Upon their Lord and Master feed.

O Triune Deity,

To thee we meekly pray,

So mayst thou visit us,

As we our homage pay;

And in thy footsteps bright

Conduct us on our way

To where thou dwell'st in cloudless light.

Amen.

Lectio 1

De Epístola prima beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 11:20-22

Lectio iv in opusculo 57

Manducátur ítaque a fidélibus, sed mínime lacerátur; quinímmo, divíso Sacraménto, sub quálibet divisiónis partícula ínteger persevérat.

℣ Memória memor ero, et tabéscet in me ánima mea.

℟ Hoc fácite in meam commemoratiónem.

℣ Jube, Dómine, benedícere.

Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 6

Psalmus 42 [7]

42:1 Júdica me, Deus, et discérne causam meam de gente non sancta, * ab hómine iníquo, et dolóso érue me.

42:2 Quia tu es, Deus, fortitúdo mea: * quare me repulísti? et quare tristis incédo, dum afflígit me inimícus?

42:5 Confitébor tibi in cíthara, Deus, Deus meus: * quare tristis es, ánima mea? et quare contúrbas me?

42:6 Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi: * salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.

℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Ant.

80:4 Buccináte in Neoménia tuba, * in insígni die solemnitátis vestræ.

80:8 In tribulatióne invocásti me, et liberávi te: * exaudívi te in abscóndito tempestátis: probávi te apud aquam contradictiónis.

Joannes 6:56-59

Tractatus 26 in Joannem, sub finem

* In me manet, et ego in eo.

℣ Non est ália nátio tam grandis, quæ hábeat deos appropinquántes sibi, sicut Deus noster adest nobis.

℟ In me manet, et ego in eo.

℣ Jube, Dómine, benedícere.

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 8

℟ Misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem:

* Et qui mandúcat me, vivet propter me.

℣ Cibávit illum Dóminus pane vitæ et intelléctus.

℟ Et qui mandúcat me, vivet propter me.

℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Et qui mandúcat me, vivet propter me.

℣ Jube, Dómine, benedícere.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 9

Sicut, inquit, misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem: et qui mandúcat me, et ipse vivet propter me. Ac si díceret: Ut ego vivam propter Patrem, id est, ad illum tamquam ad majórem réferam vitam meam, exinanítio mea fecit, in qua me misit: ut autem quisquam vivat propter me, participátio facit, qua mandúcat me. Ego ítaque humiliátus vivo propter Patrem: ille eréctus vivit propter me.

Nocturn I

Ant. A saving fruit * the Lord gave to be tasted at the time of his death.

Psalm 1 [1]

1:1 Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, † and has not remained in the way of sinners, * and has not sat in the chair of pestilence.

1:2 But his will is with the law of the Lord, * and he will meditate on his law, day and night.

1:3a And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, * which will provide its fruit in its time,

1:3b and its leaf will not fall away, * and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper.

1:4 Not so the impious, not so. * For they are like the dust that the wind casts along the face of the earth.

1:5 Therefore, the impious will not prevail again in judgment, * nor sinners in the council of the just.

1:6 For the Lord knows the way of the just. * And the path of the impious will pass away.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. A saving fruit the Lord gave to be tasted at the time of his death.

Ant. The faithful, multiplied by the fruit of grain * and wine, rest in the peace of Christ.

Psalm 4 [2]

4:2a When I called upon him, the God of my justice heeded me. * In tribulation, you have enlarged me.

4:2b Have mercy on me, * and heed my prayer.

4:3 Sons of men, how long will you be dull in heart, * so that whatever you love is in vain, and whatever you seek is false?

4:4 And know this: the Lord has made wondrous his holy one. * The Lord will heed me when I cry out to him.

4:5 Be angry, and do not be willing to sin. † The things that you say in your hearts: * be sorry for them on your beds.

4:6 Offer the sacrifice of justice, † and hope in the Lord. * Many say, “Who reveals to us what is good?”

4:7 The light of your countenance, Lord, has been sealed upon us. * You have given joy to my heart.

4:8 By the fruit of their grain, wine, and oil, * they have been multiplied.

4:9 In peace itself, * I will sleep and I will rest.

4:10 For you, O Lord, * have established me singularly in hope.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. The faithful, multiplied by the fruit of grain and wine, rest in the peace of Christ.

Ant. By the communion of the chalice, * whereby God himself is received, and not by the blood of calves, the Lord has gathered us together.

Psalm 15 [3]

15:1 Preserve me, O Lord, because I have hoped in you. † (2) I have said to the Lord: “You are my God, * so you have no need of my goodness.”

15:3 As for the saints, who are in his land: * he has made all my desires wonderful in them.

15:4a Their infirmities have been multiplied; * after this, they acted more quickly.

15:4b I will not gather for their convocations of blood, * nor will I remember their names with my lips.

15:5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup. * It is you who will restore my inheritance to me.

15:6 The lots have fallen upon me with clarity. * And, indeed, my inheritance has been very clear to me.

15:7 I will bless the Lord, who has bestowed understanding upon me. * Moreover, my temperament has also corrected me, even through the night.

15:8 I have made provision for the Lord always in my sight. * For he is at my right hand, so that I may not be disturbed.

15:9 Because of this, my heart has been joyful, and my tongue has exulted. * Moreover, even my body will rest in hope.

15:10 For you will not abandon my soul to Hell, * nor will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

15:11 You have made known to me the ways of life; † you will fill me with joy by your countenance. * At your right hand are delights, even to the end.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. By the communion of the chalice, whereby God himself is received, and not by the blood of calves, the Lord has gathered us together.

℣ He gave them bread from heaven, alleluia.

℟ Man ate the bread of Angels, alleluia.

The Our Father is said silently as far as And lead us not into temptation:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

℣ And lead us not into temptation:

℟ But deliver us from evil.

Absolution. Hear the prayers of your servants, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on us: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the eternal Father bless us with his everlasting blessing.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 1

From the First Epistle of the blessed Apostle Paul to the Corinthians

1 Cor 11:20-22

20 And so, when you assemble together as one, it is no longer in order to eat the Lord’s supper.

21 For each one first takes his own supper to eat. And as a result, one person is hungry, while another is inebriated.

22 Do you not have houses, in which to eat and drink? Or do you have such contempt for the Church of God that you would confound those who do not have such contempt? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I am not praising you in this.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ The multitude of the sons of Israel shall sacrifice a kid at the evening of the Passover:

* and they shall eat flesh and unleavened bread.

℣ Christ our Passover has been sacrificed: therefore let us feast on the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

℟ and they shall eat flesh and unleavened bread.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 2

1 Cor 11:23-26

23 For I have received from the Lord what I have also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the same night that he was handed over, took bread,

24 And giving thanks, he broke it, and said: “Take and eat. This is my body, which shall be given up for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

25 Similarly also, the cup, after he had eaten supper, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord, until he returns.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ You shall eat flesh and be satisfied with bread:

* This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.

℣ It was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

℟ This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds and hearts.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 3

1 Cor 11:27-32

27 And so, whoever eats this bread, or drinks from the cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be liable of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man examine himself, and, in this way, let him eat from that bread, and drink from that cup.

29 For whoever eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks a sentence against himself, not discerning it to be the body of the Lord.

30 As a result, many are weak and sick among you, and many have fallen asleep.

31 But if we ourselves were discerning, then certainly we would not be judged.

32 Yet when we are judged, we are being corrected by the Lord, so that we might not be condemned along with this world.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Elijah looked towards his head, at a cake baked on coals: and rising he ate and drank:

* And he walked in the strength of that food to the mountain of God.

℣ If anyone eats of this bread, he will live for ever.

℟ And he walked in the strength of that food to the mountain of God.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ And he walked in the strength of that food to the mountain of God.

Nocturn II

Ant. May the Lord be mindful * of our sacrifice: and may our whole burnt offering be made fat.

Psalm 19 [4]

19:2 May the Lord hear you in the day of tribulation. * May the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

19:3 May he send you help from the sanctuary * and watch over you from Zion.

19:4 May he be mindful of all your sacrifices, * and may your burnt-offerings be fat.

19:5 May he grant to you according to your heart, * and confirm all your counsels.

19:6 We will rejoice in your salvation, * and in the name of our God, we will be magnified.

19:7a May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. * Now I know that the Lord has saved his Christ.

19:7b He will hear him from his holy heaven. * The salvation of his right hand is in his power.

19:8 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, * but we will call upon the name of the Lord our God.

19:9 They have been bound, and they have fallen. * But we have risen up, and we have been set upright.

19:10 O Lord, save the king, * and hear us on the day that we will call upon you.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. May the Lord be mindful of our sacrifice: and may our whole burnt offering be made fat.

Ant. The table of the Lord * is spread for us against all who afflict us.

Psalm 22 [5]

22:1 The Lord directs me, and nothing will be lacking to me. * He has settled me here, in a place of pasture.

22:2 He has led me out to the water of refreshment. * He has converted my soul.

22:3 He has led me away on the paths of justice, * for the sake of his name.

22:4 For, even if I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils. * For you are with me.

22:4 Your rod and your staff, * they have given me consolation.

22:5 You have prepared a table in my sight, * opposite those who trouble me.

22:5 You have anointed my head with oil, * and my cup, which inebriates me, how brilliant it is!

22:6 And your mercy will follow me * all the days of my life,

22:6 and so may I dwell in the house of the Lord * for length of days.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. The table of the Lord is spread for us against all who afflict us.

Ant. With a voice of exultation * let those who feast at the table of the Lord resound.

Psalm 41 [6]

41:2 As the deer longs for fountains of water, * so my soul longs for you, O God.

41:3 My soul has thirsted for the strong living God. * When will I draw close and appear before the face of God?

41:4 My tears have been my bread, day and night. * Meanwhile, it is said to me daily: “Where is your God?”

41:5 These things I have remembered; and my soul within me, I have poured out. * For I will cross into the place of the wonderful tabernacle, all the way to the house of God,

41:5 with a voice of exultation and confession, * the sound of feasting.

41:6 Why are you sad, my soul? * And why do you disquiet me?

41:6 Hope in God, for I will still confess to him: * the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

41:7 My soul has been troubled within myself. * Because of this, I will remember you from the land of the Jordan and from Hermon, from the little mountain.

41:8 Abyss calls upon abyss, * with the voice of your floodgate.

41:8 All your heights and your waves * have passed over me.

41:9 In the daylight, the Lord has ordered his mercy; * and in the night, a canticle to him.

41:9 With me is a prayer to the God of my life. * I will say to God, “You are my supporter.

41:10 Why have you forgotten me? * And why do I walk in mourning, while my adversary afflicts me?”

41:11 While my bones are being broken, * my enemies, who trouble me, have reproached me.

41:11 Meanwhile, they say to me every single day, “Where is your God?” * My soul, why are you saddened? And why do you disquiet me?

41:12 Hope in God, for I will still confess to him: * the salvation of my countenance and my God.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. With a voice of exultation let those who feast at the table of the Lord resound.

℣ He fed them with the finest of wheat, alleluia.

℟ And from the rock he satisfied them with honey, alleluia.

Absolution. May his loving kindness and mercy assist us, he who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May God the almighty Father be gracious and merciful to us.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 4

A sermon of Saint Thomas Aquinas

Lesson 4 in Short Work 57

The immense benefits of divine generosity bestowed upon the Christian people confer upon them an inestimable dignity. For there neither is nor ever was so great a nation that has gods drawing near to it, as our God draws near to us. For the Only Begotten Son of God, wishing us to be partakers of his divinity, assumed our nature, so that by becoming man he might make men gods. And moreover, all that he assumed from what is ours he bestowed entirely upon us for our salvation. For he offered his body as a sacrificial victim on the altar of the Cross to God the Father for our reconciliation, and shed his blood both as a price and as a cleansing; so that, redeemed from wretched servitude, we might be cleansed from all sins. And that the memory of so great a benefit might remain ever present in us, he left his body as food and his blood as drink — to be received under the appearance of bread and wine — to the faithful.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ As they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

* Take and eat: this is my body.

℣ The men of my tabernacle said: Who will give us of his flesh, that we may be satisfied?

℟ Take and eat: this is my body.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 5

O precious and wonderful banquet, health-bearing and filled with all sweetness! For what can be more precious than this banquet? In it, not the flesh of calves and goats, as of old in the Law, but Christ true God is set before us to be received. What is more wonderful than this Sacrament? For in it the bread and wine are substantially converted into the Body and Blood of Christ; and therefore Christ, perfect God and man, is contained under the appearance of a little bread and wine. He is eaten therefore by the faithful, yet is in no way torn apart; rather, with the Sacrament divided, he remains whole under each and every part of the division. The accidents, moreover, subsist in it without a subject, so that faith may have place, while the visible is taken up invisibly, hidden beneath an alien appearance; and the senses may be rendered immune from deception, for they judge of the accidents that are known to them.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Jesus took the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new covenant in my blood:

* Do this in remembrance of me.

℣ I will be mindful and remember, and my soul shall languish within me.

℟ Do this in remembrance of me.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 6

There is no Sacrament more salutary than this, by which sins are purged, virtues are increased, and the mind is enriched with an abundance of all spiritual gifts. It is offered in the Church for the living and the dead, that it may profit all for whose salvation it was instituted. The sweetness of this Sacrament no one can sufficiently express: through it spiritual sweetness is tasted at its very source, and the memory is recalled of that most excellent charity which Christ showed in his Passion. Wherefore, that the immensity of this charity might be more deeply engraved in the hearts of the faithful, at the Last Supper, when the Passover had been celebrated with the disciples, as he was about to pass from this world to the Father, he instituted this Sacrament as the abiding memorial of his Passion, the fulfillment of the ancient figures, the greatest of the miracles he himself had worked; and as a singular consolation to those saddened by his departure, he left it behind.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ I am the bread of life; your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died:

* This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that if anyone eats of it, he will not die.

℣ I am the living bread, which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live for ever.

℟ This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that if anyone eats of it, he will not die.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that if anyone eats of it, he will not die.

Nocturn III

Ant. I will go * to the altar of God: I will receive Christ, who renews my youth.

Psalm 42 [7]

42:1 Judge me, O God, and discern my cause from that of a nation not holy; * rescue me from a man unjust and deceitful.

42:2 For you are God, my strength. * Why have you rejected me? And why do I walk in sadness, while the adversary afflicts me?

42:3 Send forth your light and your truth. * They have guided me and led me, to your holy mountain and into your tabernacles.

42:4 And I will enter, up to the altar of God, * to God who enlivens my youthfulness.

42:5 To you, O God, my God, I will confess upon a stringed instrument. * Why are you sad, my soul? And why do you disquiet me?

42:6 Hope in God, for I will still give praise to him: * the salvation of my countenance and my God.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. I will go to the altar of God: I will receive Christ, who renews my youth.

Ant. The Lord has fed us * with the finest wheat: and from the rock he has satisfied us with honey.

Psalm 80 [8]

80:2 Exult before God our helper. * Sing joyfully to the God of Jacob.

80:3 Take up a psalm, and bring forth the timbrel: * a pleasing Psalter with stringed instruments.

80:4 Sound the trumpet at the new moon, * on the noteworthy day of your solemnity,

80:5 for it is a precept in Israel * and a judgment for the God of Jacob.

80:6 He set it as a testimony with Joseph, when he went out of the land of Egypt. * He heard a tongue that he did not know.

80:7 He turned the burdens away from his back. * His hands had been a slave to baskets.

80:8 You called upon me in tribulation, and I freed you. * I heard you within the hidden tempest. I tested you with waters of contradiction.

80:9 My people, listen and I will call you to testify. * If, O Israel, you will pay heed to me, then there will be no new god among you, nor will you adore a foreign god.

80:11 For I am the Lord your God, who led you out of the land of Egypt. * Widen your mouth, and I will fill it.

80:12 But my people did not hear my voice, * and Israel was not attentive to me.

80:13 And so, I sent them away, according to the desires of their heart. * They will go forth according to their own inventions.

80:14 If my people had heard me, * if Israel had walked in my ways,

80:15 I would have humbled their enemies, as if it were nothing, * and I would have sent my hand upon those who troubled them.

80:16 The enemies of the Lord have lied to him, * and their time will come, in every age.

80:17 And he fed them from the fat of the grain, * and he saturated them with honey from the rock.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. The Lord has fed us with the finest wheat: and from the rock he has satisfied us with honey.

Ant. From your altar, * O Lord, we receive Christ: in whom our heart and flesh exult.

Psalm 83 [9]

83:2 How beloved are your tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! * My soul longs and faints for the courts of the Lord.

83:3 My heart and my flesh * have exulted in the living God.

83:4 For even the sparrow has found a home for himself, * and the turtle-dove a nest for herself, where she may lay her young:

83:4 your altars, O Lord of hosts, * my king and my God.

83:5 Blessed are those who dwell in your house, O Lord. * They will praise you from age to age.

83:6 Blessed is the man whose help is from you. * In his heart, he is disposed to ascend from the valley of tears, from the place which he has determined.

83:8 For even the lawgiver will provide a blessing; they will go from virtue to virtue. * The God of gods will be seen in Zion.

83:9 O Lord, God of hosts, hear my prayer. * Pay attention, O God of Jacob.

83:10 O God, gaze upon our protector, * and look upon the face of your Christ.

83:11 For one day in your courts is better * than thousands elsewhere.

83:11 I have chosen to be lowly in the house of my God, * rather than to dwell in the tabernacles of sinners.

83:12 For God loves mercy and truth. * The Lord will give grace and glory.

83:13 He will not withhold good things from those who walk in innocence. * O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who hopes in you.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. From your altar, O Lord, we receive Christ: in whom our heart and flesh exult.

℣ That you may bring forth bread from the earth, alleluia.

℟ And wine to gladden the heart of man, alleluia.

Absolution. May the almighty and merciful Lord absolve us from the bonds of our sins.

℟ Amen.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the evangelical reading be our salvation and protection.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 7

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to John

John 6:56-59

At that time: Jesus said to the crowds of the Jews: my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. And so forth.

A Homily of Saint Augustine the Bishop

Tractate 26 on John, near the end

Since in food and drink men seek this — that they may neither hunger nor thirst — this is truly given by no other food and drink but that which makes those who partake of it immortal and incorruptible; that is, by the fellowship itself of the Saints, where there will be peace and full and perfect unity. For this reason, therefore, as the men of God also understood before us, our Lord Jesus Christ commended his body and blood in those things which are reduced from many into one. For one thing is made into one from many grains; another flows together into one from many grapes. He then sets forth how that which he speaks of comes to pass; and what it is to eat his body and to drink his blood.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood,

* He abides in me, and I in him.

℣ There is no other nation so great that has gods so near to them, as our God is present to us.

℟ He abides in me, and I in him.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 8

He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. This then is what it means to eat that food and drink that drink — to abide in Christ, and to have him abiding in oneself. And therefore he who does not abide in Christ, and in whom Christ does not abide, without doubt neither spiritually eats his flesh nor drinks his blood, even if he crushes the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ carnally and visibly with his teeth; but rather eats and drinks the Sacrament of so great a thing unto his own judgment, since he, being unclean, has presumed to approach the Sacraments of Christ, which no one receives worthily unless he is clean — of whom it is said: Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ The living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father:

* and he who eats me will live because of me.

℣ The Lord fed him with the bread of life and understanding.

℟ and he who eats me will live because of me.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ and he who eats me will live because of me.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 9

As he says: As the living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father: so he who eats me will also live because of me. As if he were saying: That I live because of the Father—that is, that I refer my life to him as to one greater—was brought about by my self-emptying, in which he sent me: but that anyone should live because of me is brought about by participation, through which he eats me. I therefore, humbled, live because of the Father: that one, raised up, lives because of me. But if he said, I live because of the Father, because he is from him, and not the Father from him; this was said without any loss of equality. Nor, however, by saying, And he who eats me will also live because of me, did he signify that his equality and ours are the same, but he showed the grace of the mediator.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

Te Deum

O God, we praise you; * O Lord, we acclaim you.

Eternal Father, * all the earth reveres you.

To you all the Angels, * the heavens and all the Powers of heaven:

To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * cry out in endless praise:

(A bow is made) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of hosts;

Heaven and earth are filled * with the majesty of your glory.

The glorious choir of Apostles * sings to you,

the noble company of Prophets * praises you,

the white-robed army of Martyrs * glorifies you.

Holy Church throughout the earth * proclaims you,

the Father * of boundless majesty;

your true and only Son, * worthy of adoration;

and the Holy Spirit, * the Paraclete.

You, O Christ, * are the King of glory.

You are * the Father's everlasting Son.

(A bow is made) When you resolved to save the human race, * you did not spurn the Virgin's womb.

You overcame the sting of death * and opened the Kingdom of Heaven to those who put their faith in you.

You are seated at the right hand of God * in the glory of the Father.

We believe you are the Judge * who is to come.

(The following verse is said kneeling) And so we beg you, help your servants, * redeemed by your most precious blood.

Number them * among your Saints in eternal glory.

Save your people, Lord, * and bless your inheritance.

Shepherd them * and raise them to eternal life.

Day by day * we bless you,

(A bow is made, according to custom) and we praise your name * for endless ages evermore.

Be gracious, Lord, on this day, * and keep us from all sin.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, * have mercy.

May your mercy be upon us, Lord, * as we place our trust in you.

In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: * let me never be put to shame.

The rest is omitted unless Lauds is said separately.
