Invitatorium

Ant. Deum verum, unum in Trinitáte, et Trinitátem in Unitáte, * Veníte, adorémus.

Ant. Deum verum, unum in Trinitáte, et Trinitátem in Unitáte, * Veníte, adorémus.

Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo, salutári nostro: præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei.

Ant. Deum verum, unum in Trinitáte, et Trinitátem in Unitáte, * Veníte, adorémus.

Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos, quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam: quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.

Ant.

Ant. Deum verum, unum in Trinitáte, et Trinitátem in Unitáte, * Veníte, adorémus.

Hódie, si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto: ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea.

Ant. Veníte, adorémus.

Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi: Semper hi errant corde, ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas: quibus jurávi in ira mea: Si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Ant. Deum verum, unum in Trinitáte, et Trinitátem in Unitáte, * Veníte, adorémus.

℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Ant. Veníte, adorémus.

Ant. Deum verum, unum in Trinitáte, et Trinitátem in Unitáte, * Veníte, adorémus.

Ant. The true God, one in Trinity and Trinity in Unity: * Come, let us adore.

Ant. The true God, one in Trinity and Trinity in Unity: * Come, let us adore.

Come, let us exult in the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to God, our Savior. Let us anticipate his presence with confession, and let us sing joyfully to him with psalms.

Ant. The true God, one in Trinity and Trinity in Unity: * Come, let us adore.

For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all gods. For the Lord will not drive away his people. For in his hand are all the limits of the earth, and he beholds the heights of the mountains.

Ant. Come, let us adore.

For the sea is his, and he made it, and his hands established the dry land. (kneel) Come, let us adore and fall prostrate before God, and let us weep before the Lord who made us. For he is the Lord our God, and we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Ant. The true God, one in Trinity and Trinity in Unity: * Come, let us adore.

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness, where your fathers tempted me; they tested and saw my works.

Ant. Come, let us adore.

For forty years, I was near to that generation, and I said: These have always strayed in heart. But they have not known my ways. To them I swore in my wrath: They shall not enter into my rest.

Ant. The true God, one in Trinity and Trinity in Unity: * Come, let us adore.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ant. Come, let us adore.

Ant. The true God, one in Trinity and Trinity in Unity: * Come, let us adore.

Hymnus

Summæ Parens cleméntiæ,

Mundi regis qui máchinam,

Uníus et substántiæ,

Trinúsque persónis Deus:

Da déxteram surgéntibus,

Exsúrgat et mens sóbria,

Flagrans et in laudem Dei

Grates repéndet débitas.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Natóque Patris único,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

In sempitérna sǽcula.

Amen.

O God, by whose command is swayed

This ordered world which thou hast made;

Parent of heavenly clemency,

In nature One, in persons Three;

Assist us while our minds we raise,

Inflamed with thy immortal praise;

That with our sober thoughts, we may

Forever our thanksgiving pay.

May age by age thy wonders tell,

Eternal praise thy works reveal,

And sing with the celestial host

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Lectio 4

℟ Quis Deus magnus sicut Deus noster?

* Tu es Deus, qui facis mirabília.

℣ Notam fecísti in pópulis virtútem tuam: redemísti in brácchio tuo pópulum tuum.

℟ Tu es Deus, qui facis mirabília.

℣ Jube, Dómine, benedícere.

Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 5

℟ Tibi laus, tibi glória, tibi gratiárum áctio in sǽcula sempitérna,

* O beáta Trínitas.

℣ Et benedíctum nomen glóriæ tuæ sanctum: et laudábile et superexaltátum in sǽcula.

℟ O beáta Trínitas.

℣ Jube, Dómine, benedícere.

Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 6

95:12 Tunc exsultábunt ómnia ligna silvárum a fácie Dómini, quia venit: * quóniam venit judicáre terram.

Psalmus 96 [8]

96:1 Dóminus regnávit, exsúltet terra: * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.

96:2 Nubes, et calígo in circúitu ejus: * justítia, et judícium corréctio sedis ejus.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 28:18-20

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

℟ Amen.

Lectio 8

Nocturn I

Ant. Be present, one God * almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Psalm 8 [1]

8:2a O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!

8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.

8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants, you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.

8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.

8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him, * or the son of man, that you visit him?

8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; † you have crowned him with glory and honor, * (7) and you have set him over the works of your hands.

8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition: the beasts of the field,

8:9 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, * which pass through the paths of the sea.

8:10 O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 18 [2]

18:2 The heavens describe the glory of God, * and the firmament announces the work of his hands.

18:3 Day proclaims the word to day, * and night to night imparts knowledge.

18:4 There are no speeches or conversations, * where their voices are not being heard.

18:5 Their sound has gone forth through all the earth, * and their words to the ends of the world.

18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun, * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom.

18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way; * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven.

18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit. * Neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.

18:8 The law of the Lord is immaculate, converting souls. * The testimony of the Lord is faithful, providing wisdom to little ones.

18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts. * The precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.

18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations. * The judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves:

18:11 desirable beyond gold and many precious stones, * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.

18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.

18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please, * along with the meditation of my heart, in your sight, forever,

18:15b O Lord, my helper * and my redeemer.

23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.

23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.

23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?

23:4 The innocent of hands and the clean of heart, * who has not received his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.

23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.

23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

23:8 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord who is strong and powerful; the Lord powerful in battle.

23:9 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

23:10 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord of virtue. He himself is the King of Glory.

Lesson 1

From the Prophet Isaiah

Isa 6:1-4

1 In the year in which king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, sublime and exalted, and the things that were under him filled the temple.

2 The Seraphim were standing above the throne. One had six wings, and the other had six wings: with two they were covering his face, and with two they were covering his feet, and with two they were flying.

3 And they were crying out to one another, and saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!”

4 And the lintels above the hinges were shaken at the voice of the one crying out. And the house was filled with smoke.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ I saw the Lord seated upon a high and exalted throne, and the whole earth was filled with his majesty:

* And the things beneath him filled the temple.

℣ Seraphim stood above it: six wings to the one, and six wings to the other.

℟ And the things beneath him filled the temple.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 2

Isa 6:5-8

5 And I said: “Woe to me! For I have remained silent. For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live in the midst of a people having unclean lips, and I have seen with my eyes the King, the Lord of hosts!”

6 And one of the Seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a burning coal, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.

7 And he touched my mouth, and he said, “Behold, this has touched your lips, and so your iniquities will be taken away, and your sin will be cleansed.”

8 And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send?” and, “Who will go for us?” And I said: “Here I am. Send me.”

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, who alone works great wonders:

* And blessed is the name of his majesty for ever.

℣ All the earth shall be filled with his majesty: so be it, so be it.

℟ And blessed is the name of his majesty for ever.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds and hearts.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 3

Isa 6:9-12

9 And he said: “Go forth! And you shall say to this people: ‘When you listen, you will hear and not understand. And when you see a vision, you will not comprehend.’

10 Blind the heart of this people. Make their ears heavy and close their eyes, lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and then I would heal them.”

11 And I said, “For how long, O Lord?” And he said, “Until the cities are desolate, without an inhabitant, and the houses are without a man, and the land will be left behind, deserted.”

12 For the Lord will take the men far away, and she who will have been left behind will be multiplied in the midst of the earth.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ May God bless us, our God bless us, may God bless us:

* And let all the ends of the earth fear him.

47:4 In her houses, God will be known, * since he will support her.

47:5 For behold, the kings of the earth have been gathered together; * they have convened as one.

47:7 In that place, their pains were that of a woman in labor. * With a vehement spirit, you will crush the ships of Tarshish.

71:4 He will judge the poor of the people, and he will bring salvation to the sons of the poor. * And he will humble the false accuser.

71:5 And he will remain, with the sun and before the moon, * from generation to generation.

Lesson 4

From the book of Saint Fulgentius the Bishop, On Faith to Peter

Among the Works of Augustine, volume 3

The faith which the holy Patriarchs and Prophets received divinely before the Incarnation of the Son of God, which the holy Apostles also heard from the Lord himself while dwelling in the flesh, and which, instructed by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, they not only proclaimed by word but also committed to writing for the most wholesome instruction of posterity — this faith proclaims one God in Trinity, that is, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But the Trinity would not be true if the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit were said to be one and the same person.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Who is a God so great as our God?

* You are God, who works wonders.

℣ You have made known your power among the peoples: with your arm you have redeemed your people.

℟ You are God, who works wonders.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 5

For if, just as it is one substance of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it were also one Person, there would be nothing at all in which the Trinity could truly be spoken of. Again, the Trinity would indeed be real, but the Trinity itself would not be one God, if, just as the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit are distinct from one another by the property of their persons, so they had also been separated by a diversity of natures. But because in that one true God, the Trinity, it is naturally true not only that he is one God, but also that he is Trinity; therefore that same true God is Trinity in persons, and one in one nature.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ To you be praise, to you be glory, to you be thanksgiving throughout the ages,

* O blessed Trinity.

℣ And blessed is the name of your holy glory: praiseworthy and supremely exalted for ever.

℟ O blessed Trinity.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 6

Through this natural unity, the entire Father is in the Son and in the Holy Spirit; the entire Son is in the Father and in the Holy Spirit; and the entire Holy Spirit likewise is in the Father and in the Son. None of these is outside any of the others: for no one of them either precedes another in eternity, or exceeds another in greatness, or surpasses another in power; for neither is the Father, as regards the unity of the divine nature, earlier or greater than the Son or the Holy Spirit; nor can the eternity and immensity of the Son, as though prior or greater, by nature precede or exceed the immensity and eternity of the Holy Spirit.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised:

* and there is no numbering of his wisdom.

℣ Great is the Lord, and great is his power: and of his wisdom there is no end.

℟ and there is no numbering of his wisdom.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ and there is no numbering of his wisdom.

Nocturn III

Ant. Charity * is the Father, grace the Son, communion the Holy Spirit, O blessed Trinity.

Psalm 95 [7]

95:1 Sing to the Lord a new song. * Sing to the Lord, all the earth.

95:2 Sing to the Lord and bless his name. * Announce his salvation from day to day.

95:3 Announce his glory among the Gentiles, * his miracles among all peoples.

95:4 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised. * He is terrible, beyond all gods.

95:5 For all the gods of the Gentiles are demons, * but the Lord made the heavens.

95:6 Confession and beauty are in his sight. * Sanctity and magnificence are in his sanctuary.

95:7 Bring to the Lord, you natives of the nations, bring to the Lord glory and honor. * Bring to the Lord glory for his name.

95:8 Lift up sacrifices, and enter into his courts. * Adore the Lord in his holy court.

95:9 Let the entire earth be shaken before his face. * Say among the Gentiles: The Lord has reigned.

95:10 For he has even corrected the whole world, which will not be shaken. * He will judge the peoples with fairness.

95:11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth exult; let the sea and all its fullness be moved. * The fields and all the things that are in them will be glad.

95:12 Then all the trees of the forest will rejoice before the face of the Lord: for he arrives. * For he arrives to judge the earth.

95:13 He will judge the whole world with fairness * and the peoples with his truth.

Lesson 7

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 28:18-20

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples: All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go forth and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And so forth.

A Homily of Saint Gregory Nazianzen

Treatise on Faith, after the beginning

What Catholic does not know that the Father is truly Father, the Son is truly Son, and the Holy Spirit is truly Holy Spirit? As the Lord himself says to his Apostles: Going, baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is the perfect Trinity subsisting in unity, which we profess to be of one substance. For we do not, after the manner of bodies, make division in God; but according to the power of the divine nature, which is not in matter, we both believe that the persons of the names truly subsist and testify that the unity of the divinity is one.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Let us bless the Father and the Son with the Holy Spirit:

* Let us praise and exalt him above all for ever.

℣ Blessed are you, O Lord, in the firmament of heaven: and worthy of praise and glorious for ever.

℟ Let us praise and exalt him above all for ever.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 8

We do not say that the Son of God is an extension of one part from another part, as some have supposed; nor do we take the Word as something without substance, like the sound of a voice: but we believe that the three Names and three Persons are of one essence, one majesty, and one power. And therefore we confess one God: because the unity of majesty forbids the plural name of gods.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Two Seraphim cried out one to the other:

* Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts. * All the earth is filled with his glory.

℣ For there are Three who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these Three are One.

℟ Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ All the earth is filled with his glory.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benediction. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

℟ Amen.

Lesson 9

In the end we name Father and Son in Catholic usage; but to speak of two Gods we neither can nor ought. Not that the Son of God is not God — he is indeed true God from true God — but because we know the Son of God from no other than from that one Father himself, therefore we say one God. For the Prophets, the Apostles, and the Lord himself taught this, when he says: I and the Father are one. One he refers to the unity of divinity, as I have said; but We are, he assigns to the Persons.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

Te Deum

O God, we praise you; * O Lord, we acclaim you.

Eternal Father, * all the earth reveres you.

To you all the Angels, * the heavens and all the Powers of heaven:

To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * cry out in endless praise:

(A bow is made) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of hosts;

Heaven and earth are filled * with the majesty of your glory.

The glorious choir of Apostles * sings to you,

the noble company of Prophets * praises you,

the white-robed army of Martyrs * glorifies you.

Holy Church throughout the earth * proclaims you,

the Father * of boundless majesty;

your true and only Son, * worthy of adoration;

and the Holy Spirit, * the Paraclete.

You, O Christ, * are the King of glory.

You are * the Father's everlasting Son.

(A bow is made) When you resolved to save the human race, * you did not spurn the Virgin's womb.

You overcame the sting of death * and opened the Kingdom of Heaven to those who put their faith in you.

You are seated at the right hand of God * in the glory of the Father.

We believe you are the Judge * who is to come.

(The following verse is said kneeling) And so we beg you, help your servants, * redeemed by your most precious blood.

Number them * among your Saints in eternal glory.

Save your people, Lord, * and bless your inheritance.

Shepherd them * and raise them to eternal life.

Day by day * we bless you,

(A bow is made, according to custom) and we praise your name * for endless ages evermore.

Be gracious, Lord, on this day, * and keep us from all sin.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, * have mercy.

May your mercy be upon us, Lord, * as we place our trust in you.

In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: * let me never be put to shame.

The rest is omitted unless Lauds is said separately.

Oratio

Omnípotens sempitérne Deus, qui dedísti fámulis tuis in confessióne veræ fídei, ætérnæ Trinitátis glóriam agnóscere, et in poténtia majestátis adoráre Unitátem: quǽsumus; ut, ejúsdem fídei firmitáte, ab ómnibus semper muniámur advérsis.

℟ And let my cry come before you.

Let us pray.

Almighty ever-living God, who have given your servants, in the confession of the true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of majesty to adore the Unity: we pray that, by the steadfastness of that same faith, we may always be defended against all adversities.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son: who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
