Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,

Lowly of heart, our God we pray

That he from harm may keep us free

In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,

Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:

His favouring care our guardian be,

Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin

And folly find no place therein:

Scant need of food, excess denied,

Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,

And night in course shall follow on.

We, free from cares the world affords,

May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the holy Paraclete.

Amen.

Psalm 22 [1]

22:1 The Lord directs me, and nothing will be lacking to me. * He has settled me here, in a place of pasture.

22:2 He has led me out to the water of refreshment. * He has converted my soul.

22:3 He has led me away on the paths of justice, * for the sake of his name.

22:4 For, even if I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils. * For you are with me.

22:4 Your rod and your staff, * they have given me consolation.

22:5 You have prepared a table in my sight, * opposite those who trouble me.

22:5 You have anointed my head with oil, * and my cup, which inebriates me, how brilliant it is!

22:6 And your mercy will follow me * all the days of my life,

22:6 and so may I dwell in the house of the Lord * for length of days.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 71(2-8) [2]

71:4 He will judge the poor of the people, and he will bring salvation to the sons of the poor. * And he will humble the false accuser.

71:5 And he will remain, with the sun and before the moon, * from generation to generation.

71:6 He will descend like rain upon fleece, * and like showers showering upon the earth.

71:7 In his days, justice will rise like the sun, with abundance of peace, * until the moon is taken away.

71:11 And all the kings of the earth shall adore him. * All nations will serve him.

71:12 For he will free the poor from the powerful, * and the poor one who has no helper.

71:13 He will spare the poor and the indigent, * and he will bring salvation to the souls of the poor.

71:14 He will redeem their souls from usuries and from iniquity, * and their names shall be honorable in his sight.

71:15 And he will live, and to him will be given from the gold of Arabia, and by him they will always adore. * They will bless him all day long.

71:16 And there will be a firmament on earth, at the summits of mountains: its fruits will be extolled above Lebanon, * and those of the city will flourish like the grass of the earth.

71:17 May his name be blessed forever; * may his name remain before the sun.

71:17 And all the tribes of the earth will be blessed in him. * All nations will magnify him.

The Twenty-Fourth of April. The seventh day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

At Seewis in Rhaetia, Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and Martyr. Sent there to preach the Catholic faith, he was killed there by heretics and completed his martyrdom. Pope Benedict XIV enrolled him among the holy Martyrs.

At Rome, Saint Sabas, commander of soldiers, who was accused of visiting Christians detained in prison and freely confessed Christ before the judge. The same judge then burned him with torches and cast him into a cauldron of boiling pitch. He emerged unharmed, and by this miracle converted seventy men to Christ; all of them remained steadfast in confessing the faith and were slain with the sword. At last he too was drowned in a river and completed his martyrdom.

At Lyons in Gaul, the heavenly birthday of Saint Alexander, Martyr. In the persecution of Antoninus Verus, after imprisonment, he was first so torn by the cruelty of those who scourged him that his ribs were separated and his entrails and the inward parts of his body exposed. Then, nailed to the cross, he died and gave up his blessed spirit. Thirty-four others suffered with him, whose memory is kept on other days.

At Nicomedia, the holy Martyrs Eusebius, Neon, Leontius, Longinus, and four others, who during the persecution of Diocletian, after dreadful tortures, were slain with the sword.

In England, the burial of Saint Mellitus, Bishop, who was sent to England by Saint Gregory, Pope, and converted the East Saxons and their king to the faith.

At Elvira in Spain, Saint Gregory, Bishop and Confessor.

At Brescia, Saint Honorius, Bishop.

On Iona, an island of Scotland, Saint Egbert, Priest and Monk, a man of admirable humility and continence.

At Rheims in Gaul, the holy Virgins Bova and Doda.

At Angers in Gaul, Saint Mary of Saint Euphrasia Pelletier, Virgin, foundress of the Institute of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, whom Pope Pius XII enrolled among the Saints.

At Milan, the conversion of Saint Augustine, Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church. Blessed Ambrose, Bishop, taught him the truth of the Catholic faith and baptized him on this day.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
