Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,

Lowly of heart, our God we pray

That he from harm may keep us free

In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,

Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:

His favouring care our guardian be,

Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin

And folly find no place therein:

Scant need of food, excess denied,

Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,

And night in course shall follow on.

We, free from cares the world affords,

May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the holy Paraclete.

Amen.

Psalm 23 [1]

23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.

23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.

23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?

23:4 The innocent of hands and the clean of heart, * who has not received his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.

23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.

23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

23:8 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord who is strong and powerful; the Lord powerful in battle.

23:9 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

23:10 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord of virtue. He himself is the King of Glory.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 18(2-7b) [2]

18:2 The heavens describe the glory of God, * and the firmament announces the work of his hands.

18:3 Day proclaims the word to day, * and night to night imparts knowledge.

18:4 There are no speeches or conversations, * where their voices are not being heard.

18:5 Their sound has gone forth through all the earth, * and their words to the ends of the world.

18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun, * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom.

18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way; * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven.

18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit. * Neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts. * The precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.

18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations. * The judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves:

18:11 desirable beyond gold and many precious stones, * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.

18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.

18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please, * along with the meditation of my heart, in your sight, forever,

18:15b O Lord, my helper * and my redeemer.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

The Fourteenth of April. The twenty-sixth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

Saint Justin, Philosopher and Martyr, whose memory is recorded on the day before this.

At Rome, on the Appian Way, the birthday of the holy Martyrs Tiburtius, Valerian, and Maximus, under the Emperor Alexander and the Prefect Almachius. The first two of these, converted to Christ by the exhortation of the blessed Cecilia and baptized by the holy Pope Urban, were afterward, for confessing the faith, beaten with rods and struck with the sword; but Maximus, chamberlain of the Prefect, having himself believed in Christ, moved by their steadfastness and strengthened by an angelic vision, was beaten with leaded whips until he breathed his last.

At Interamna, Saint Proculus, Bishop and Martyr.

On the same day, Saint Ardalion the mime, who, while mocking the rites of Christians in the theater, was suddenly changed, and confirmed them not only by words but also by the testimony of his own blood.

At Interamna, Saint Domnina, Virgin and Martyr, crowned with her companion Virgins.

At Alexandria, Saint Thomais the Martyr, who was struck by the sword by her father-in-law, because she had refused to consent to his shameless desires, and was cut through the middle into two parts.

At Lyons in Gaul, Saint Lambert, Bishop and Confessor.

At Alexandria, Saint Fronto the Abbot, whose life shone with holiness and miracles.

At Rome, Saint Abundius, Mansionary of the church of Saint Peter.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
