It is manifest that by these precepts our whole intention is directed toward interior joys: lest, seeking our reward outwardly, we be conformed to this age and lose the promise of a beatitude so much more solid and firm as it is more interior—a beatitude through which God chose us to be conformed to the image of his Son. In this chapter, moreover, it must especially be noted that vainglory can exist not only in the splendor and pomp of worldly things, but also in mournful squalor itself; and it is all the more dangerous for deceiving under the name of the service of God.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Today I came to the spring of water, and I prayed to the Lord, saying:

* O Lord, God of Abraham, you have made my desire prosper.

℣ Therefore, the maiden to whom I shall say, Give me water to drink from your jar, and she shall say, Drink, my lord, and I will give your camels drink also: she it is whom the Lord has prepared for the son of my master.

Lesson 2

He, therefore, who shines with excessive care for bodily adornment and dress, or for the splendor of other possessions, is easily convicted by the very things themselves of being a follower of the pomps of the world, and deceives no one with the deceptive appearance of holiness. But he who in his profession of Christianity, through unusual slovenliness and squalor, draws the eyes of men upon himself — doing so by will and not enduring it out of necessity — from his other works it can be conjectured whether he does this out of contempt for superfluous adornment or out of some form of ambition: for the Lord commanded us to beware of wolves in sheep's clothing. But by their fruits, he says, you shall know them.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ The word of the Lord came to Abram, saying:

* Fear not, Abram: I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.

℣ For I am the Lord your God, who brought you forth from Ur of the Chaldeans.

Lesson 3

For when, through certain trials, the very things which they have attained or desire to attain under this covering begin to be withdrawn from them or denied to them — then it is necessary that it appear whether a wolf in sheep's clothing is present, or a sheep in its own skin. Yet for this reason a Christian should not adorn himself in superfluous display to please the eyes of men, because impostors too often make use of that plain and necessary garb so as to deceive the unwary; for those sheep should not put off their own skins if wolves sometimes cover themselves with them.
