Hymnus
Jam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.
Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.
Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.
Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Ejúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.
May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.
May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.
That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.
All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

The Twenty-Fifth of July. The twenty-ninth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2025.
Saint James the Apostle, brother of blessed John the Evangelist. Beheaded by Herod Agrippa near the feast of Easter, he was the first of the Apostles to receive the crown of martyrdom. His sacred bones, translated on this day from Jerusalem to Spain and laid in Galicia at its farthest limits, are devoutly honored with the most celebrated veneration of those peoples and with frequent gatherings of Christians who go there out of devotion and to fulfill their vows.
In Lycia, Saint Christopher, Martyr, who under Decius was beaten with iron rods and saved from a blazing fire by the heavenly power of Christ. Finally, pierced by arrows, he completed his martyrdom by beheading.
At Barcelona in Spain, the heavenly birthday of blessed Cucuphas, Martyr, who in the persecution of Diocletian, under the governor Dacian, overcame very many torments and finally, struck with the sword, passed victorious to heaven.
In Palestine, Saint Paul, Martyr, who in the persecution of Maximian Galerius, under the governor Firmilian, was condemned to beheading. Having obtained a little time to pray, he prayed to God with all his heart: first for his own countrymen, then for the Jews and Gentiles that they might recognize the truth of the faith, afterward for the surrounding crowd, and finally for the judge who had condemned him and the executioner who was about to strike him. His head was then cut off, and he received the crown of martyrdom.
At Furconium among the Vestini, the holy martyrs Florentius and Felix, of Sipontum.
At Cordoba in Spain, Saint Theodemir, Monk and Martyr.
In Palestine, Saint Valentina, Virgin. When she had been brought to the altar to sacrifice and had overturned it with her feet, she was first most cruelly tortured; then, cast into the fire with a fellow virgin, she hastened to her Spouse.
At Trier, Saint Magneric, Bishop and Confessor.
℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.
℟ The death of his Saints.
May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
℟ Amen.
