23 Prætériens enim, et videns simulácra vestra, invéni et aram in qua scriptum erat: Ignóto Deo. Quod ergo ignorántes cólitis, hoc ego annúntio vobis.
24 Deus, qui fecit mundum, et ómnia quæ in eo sunt, hic cæli et terræ cum sit Dóminus, non in manufáctis templis hábitat,
25 nec mánibus humánis cólitur índigens áliquo, cum ipse det ómnibus vitam, et inspiratiónem, et ómnia:
26 fecítque ex uno omne genus hóminum inhabitáre super univérsam fáciem terræ, defíniens statúta témpora, et términos habitatiónis eórum,
27 quǽrere Deum si forte attréctent eum, aut invéniant, quamvis non longe sit ab unoquóque nostrum.
22 Then Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: 'Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are rather superstitious.
23 For as I was passing by and noticing your idols, I also found an altar, on which was written: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this is what I am preaching to you:
24 the God who made the world and all that is in it, the One who is the Lord of heaven and earth, who does not live in temples made with hands,
25 neither is he served by the hands of men, as if in need of anything, since it is he who gives to all things life and breath and all else.
26 And he has made, out of one, every family of man: to live upon the face of the entire earth, determining the appointed seasons and the limits of their habitation,
27 so as to seek God, if perhaps they may consider him or find him, though he is not far from each one of us.'

29 Genus ergo cum simus Dei, non debémus æstimáre auro, aut argénto, aut lápidi, sculptúræ artis, et cogitatiónis hóminis, divínum esse símile.
30 Et témpora quidem huius ignorántiæ despíciens Deus, nunc annúntiat homínibus ut omnes ubíque pœniténtiam agant,
31 eo quod státuit diem in quo iudicatúrus est orbem in æquitáte, in viro in quo státuit, fidem præbens ómnibus, súscitans eum a mórtuis.
32 Cum audíssent autem resurrectiónem mortuórum, quidam quidem irridébant, quidam vero dixérunt: Audiémus te de hoc íterum.
33 Sic Paulus exívit de médio eórum.
28 'For in him we live, and move, and exist.' Just as some of your own poets have said. 'For we are also of his family.'
29 Therefore, since we are of the family of God, we must not consider gold or silver or precious stones, or the engravings of art and of the imagination of man, to be a representation of what is Divine.
30 And indeed, God, having looked down to see the ignorance of these times, has now announced to men that everyone everywhere should do penance.
31 For he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in equity, through the man whom he has appointed, offering faith to all, by raising him from the dead.
32 And when they had heard about the Resurrection of the dead, indeed, some were derisive, while others said, 'We will listen to you about this again.'
33 So Paul departed from their midst.

Quod cum Petrus audísset, et probávit, et Ecclésiæ legéndum sua auctoritáte dedit. Assúmpto ítaque Evangélio quod ipse confécerat, perréxit in Ægýptum, et primus Alexandríæ Christum annúntians, constítuit ecclésiam tanta doctrína et vitæ continéntia, ut omnes sectatóres Christi ad exémplum sui cógeret.
Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, according to what he had heard Peter recounting, wrote at the request of the brethren at Rome a brief Gospel. When Peter heard of it, he approved it and gave it to the Church to be read by his authority. Mark then, taking up the Gospel he had himself composed, went to Egypt, and preaching Christ first at Alexandria, established a Church of such doctrine and sobriety of life that he constrained all the followers of Christ to follow his example.

Finally, Philo, the most eloquent of the Jews, seeing at Alexandria the first church still judaizing, wrote a book on their manner of life in praise, as it were, of his own people. And as Luke narrates that those who believed in Jerusalem had all things in common, so he too committed to memory what he saw being done at Alexandria under the teacher Mark. He died in the eighth year of Nero, and was buried at Alexandria, with Anianus succeeding him.

Sancta quátuor animália, quæ prophetíæ spíritu futúra prævidéntur, subtíli narratióne describúntur, cum dícitur: Quátuor fácies uni, et quátuor pennæ uni. Quid per fáciem, nisi notítia; et quid per pennas, nisi volátus exprímitur? Per fáciem quippe unusquísque cognóscitur: per pennas vero in altum ávium córpora sublevántur. Fácies ítaque ad fidem pértinet, penna ad contemplatiónem. Per fidem namque ab omnipoténti Deo cognóscimur, sicut ipse de suis óvibus dicit: Ego sum pastor bonus, et cognósco oves meas, et cognóscunt me meæ. Qui rursus ait: Ego scio quos elégerim. The four holy living creatures, which are foreseen by the spirit of prophecy as future realities, are described with subtle narration, when it is said: Four faces to each one, and four wings to each one. What is expressed by the face, but knowledge; and what by the wings, but flight? For by the face each one is recognized; by the wings, the bodies of birds are lifted into the heights. The face, therefore, pertains to faith, the wing to contemplation. For by faith we are known to almighty God, as he himself says of his sheep: I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, and my sheep know me. Who says again: I know those whom I have chosen. By contemplation, however, by which we are lifted above ourselves, we are raised as it were into the air.

Atque eiúsdem bonitátis formam, quam nos imitémur, adiúngit, dicens: Bonus pastor ánimam suam ponit pro óvibus suis. Fecit quod mónuit: osténdit quod iussit. Bonus pastor pro óvibus suis ánimam suam pósuit, ut in sacraménto nostro corpus suum et sánguinem vérteret, et oves quas redémerat, carnis suæ aliménto satiáret.
You have heard, dearest brethren, your instruction from the reading of the Gospel; you have also heard of our peril. For behold, he who is good not by an accidental gift but essentially, says: I am the good shepherd. And he adds the form of that same goodness which we are to imitate, saying: The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. He did what he enjoined; he showed what he commanded. The good shepherd laid down his life for his sheep, so that in the Sacrament he would transform his Body and Blood for our sake, and satisfy the sheep he had redeemed with the nourishment of his own flesh.

And there are some who, while they love earthly substance more than the sheep, deservedly lose the name of shepherd: of whom it is immediately added: But the hireling, and he who is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming, and he leaves the sheep, and flees. He is called not shepherd but hireling, who feeds the Lord's sheep not out of interior love, but for temporal wages. For he is truly a hireling who indeed holds the place of shepherd, but does not seek the profit of souls: he yearns for earthly advantages, rejoices in the honor of preferment, is nourished by temporal gains, is glad at the reverence shown him by men.
